MHB. “Every time I'm about to join the selection, a disaster happens to me”: Kyllian Villeminot's confidences

The Montpellier Handball center half was mowed down in mid-flight on November 6th. A year after a first rupture of the Achilles tendon (the left one), he broke his right one.

Kyllian Villeminot is back on the ground. After six weeks of legs in the air, the Montpellier Handball center half received the green light from the faculty. That was on December 19. Today, he walks without his protective boot. “I'm gradually getting back to walking.” For running, weight training and handball, the best MHB player at the start of the season will have to wait a little longer.

A year almost to the day after a first rupture of his left Achilles tendon, Villeminot, 26, tore his right Achilles tendon on November 6, during his first selection with the French team. “Every time I'm about to join the selection, something bad happens to me…”, the person in question ruminates.

“The day before, I had done some great training”

The Montpellier native is still trying to understand. Before being mowed down in the middle of a climb, he was walking on water. “There were no warning signs, no pain, no apprehension. The day before, I had done a great workout. Forty seconds later…” It was already over. “I discussed it a lot with the French team doctors and Alain (Carmand), our physiotherapist, apparently, there are no rules. Did I compensate with the other foot ? Maybe, surely, I don't know. There's no real explanation.” Apart from maybe bad luck…

Alain Carmand confirms it: “Two breakups, that's almost unheard of . From memory, only Kevin Nyokas has had this happen to him. As for Kyllian, it's pretty much the only place (his right Achilles tendon) where he had no problem. It is “

“Physically, I work well, I am serious in everything I do” , the boy explains further. “It must be part of a career,” he specifies, a bit disillusioned. “I've been waiting for this moment (the first Marseillaise) for so long. The next two weeks were a mixture of disappointment, sadness and anger.”

He knows the rest by heart. After the plaster and the injections, the first physiotherapy sessions will soon come. The return to competition will be for next fall. “Even if it's better to break your cruciate ligament three times than your tendon, there's no reason why it shouldn't go well. We're going to strengthen all that”, promises Almain Carmand.

“I won't give up”

“In 2023, I had surgery on December 19; in 2024, it was on November 8. So, I'm a month ahead”, jokes Kyllian Villeminot, resilience in hand.“I won't give up. I'm sure I'll come back stronger.”

In the meantime, he fully intends to watch all the matches of the French team on TV, which begins its World Championship on January 14 against Qatar. “The guys, the entire staff of Les Bleus, they were all there for me. It was a great support. I'm going to follow them until the end.”

“A good first half of the season”

Although on the sidelines, Kyllian Villeminot hasn't really digested the last MHB match before the break. “The draw against Toulouse hurt us, it's very frustrating”, he explains. For the rest, Montpellier Handball is on target. “Whether in the league or the European Cup, nothing is decided. We had a good first half of the season.”
