Molina drives Cardinals off Cubs with hit in 10th

ST. LOUIS, Missouri, U.S. (AP) – Yadier Molina hit a winning-run double over All-Star closer Craig Kimbrel in the 10th inning and the St. Louis Cardinals won on Wednesday 3 -2 to the Chicago Cubs.

Adam Wainwright pitched seven solid innings for the Cardinals. Harrison Bader and Dylan Carlson each hit RBI doubles in the seventh to lead St. Louis 2-1 on the scoreboard.

Bader also prevented an early two-run home run by Willson Contreras.

Chicago tied in the ninth with a pinch hitter Eric Sogard’s RBI double against Giovanny Gallegos of Mexico.

Paul Goldschmidt led the bottom of the 10th as a runner at second base. Nolan Arenado was walked by Kimbrel (1-3), who got the last out in the ninth for the Cubs. Puerto Rican Molina then sent the ball to right field for a double ground that closed the game.

TJ McFarland (1-0) scored his first win for the Cardinals after a perfect 10th inning.

For the Cubs, Venezuelans Rafael Ortega 3-1, with an RBI; Willson Contreras 2-1; Robinson Chirinos 1-0. Puerto Rican Javier Báez 4-1.

For the Cardinals, Puerto Rican Yadier Molina 5-1, with an RBI. Panamanian Edmundo Sosa 1-0.
