Health authorities are recalling several Morbier cheeses after identifying 11 cases of E. coli contamination in January.

Health authorities have recalled raw-milk Morbier cheeses made by the Doubs-based company Perrin-Vermot due to possible contamination by the Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria, they announced in a press release on Saturday.

Eleven cases of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) due to this bacterium have been identified by the health authorities in adults, nine of which were confirmed by the National Reference Center for Escherichia coli (Institut Pasteur Paris and Robert Debré Hospital), they indicate.

Produced by the Perrin-Vermot company

The investigations carried out by Santé publique France led to the identification of convergent epidemiological and traceability elements, “making the link with the consumption of Morbier cheeses made from raw milk produced by the Perrin-Vermot company (25) and the occurrence of these grouped cases of SHU”.

“Microbiological investigations are underway on the cheese products”, add the health authorities. The products were marketed between November 12, 2024 and January 24, 2025 by the Perrin-Vermot cheese factory throughout the country, directly, in supermarkets or through intermediaries.

The health authorities ask people who may have these products not to consume them. The cheese producer withdrew and recalled certain batches of Morbier on Saturday, in wheels, portions, slices or cheese platters.

Organic Morbier and long-ripened Morbier are not affected by this recall. The Perrin-Vermot company has set up an information number for consumers: 03 81 62 06 29.

What are the symptoms?

People who experience diarrhea, abdominal pain, or vomiting within 3-4 days of consuming these products (15 days maximum) are invited to consult their doctor quickly, reporting this consumption and the recall of the products by the company, emphasizes the health authorities.

The products concerned can be identified according to the sheets published on Rappelconso or at points of sale. These files can be viewed online: https://rappel.conso.gouv.fr/categorie/0/1/morbier
