More than 10 years after the acquisition of Oculus, Meta would finally see the light at the end of the tunnel

In 2014, Meta (then Facebook) bought virtual reality specialist Oculus for $2 billion. This acquisition was a real turning point for the company. Indeed, it allowed Meta to enter the hardware sector and position itself as one of the future leaders in the mixed reality market. More than 10 years later, the Reality Labs division is still not making a profit. However, according to an article from Business Insider, it is starting to achieve very encouraging results.

Business Insider reports that it has seen an internal memo from Andrew Bosworth, Meta’s chief technology officer, on Reality Labs’ performance in 2024. In it, the executive reportedly said that sales would increase 40% and that the company would exceed nearly all of its goals. “2024 was a pivotal year for Reality Labs and positioned us for greatness in 2025,” he also reportedly said.

We will probably have more precise data when Meta presents its next quarterly results. But in any case, indicators have also shown that Meta's Quest mixed reality headsets were a hit at Christmas. Indeed, after Christmas, the Meta Horizon app climbed to number one in the App Store ranking in the United States. As a reminder, in 2024, Meta launched the Quest 3S, which is an affordable version of its Quest headset. Alternatively, it is also possible that Meta benefited from the launch of Apple's Vision Pro. Indeed, thanks to this launch, there has been a renewed interest in mixed reality around the world.

Meta close to its ultimate goal ?

Currently, Meta markets mixed reality headsets, as well as connected glasses that are offered in partnership with Ray-Ban. But the ultimate goal of the Reality Labs division is to offer augmented reality glasses that will be able to replace smartphones. And in 2024, Meta finally unveiled its first prototype.

Moreover, it is rumored that Meta's first augmented reality glasses could be marketed in 2027. And, in the meantime, the group could also offer simple connected glasses with a screen.
