In 2014, Meta (then Facebook) bought virtual reality specialist Oculus for $2 billion. This acquisition was a real turning point for the company. Indeed, it allowed Meta to enter the hardware sector and position itself as one of the future leaders in the mixed reality market. More than 10 years later, the Reality Labs division is still not making a profit. However, according to an article from Business Insider, it is starting to achieve very encouraging results.
Business Insider reports that it has seen an internal memo from Andrew Bosworth, Meta’s chief technology officer, on Reality Labs’ performance in 2024. In it, the executive reportedly said that sales would increase 40% and that the company would exceed nearly all of its goals. “2024 was a pivotal year for Reality Labs and positioned us for greatness in 2025,” he also reportedly said.

Meta close to its ultimate goal ?
Currently, Meta markets mixed reality headsets, as well as connected glasses that are offered in partnership with Ray-Ban. Moreover, it is rumored that Meta's first augmented reality glasses could be marketed in 2027. And, in the meantime, the group could also offer simple connected glasses with a screen.
