Pharaoh will perform in Kyiv in April, Noize MC and Scryptonite will perform in May, Basta will give two concerts. And at the beginning of summer, the most scandalous star of Russian rap, Morgenstern, will arrive.
In December last year, the public was taken aback by the list of the most popular clips among Ukrainians according to Google. Of the domestic performers, only the duet Monatika with Vera Brezhneva got into the top ten, the rest are Russian. The sixth and eighth places were taken by the rapper Morgenstern.
And here is a new sensation: in June, this scandalous artist is going to Ukraine with a mini-tour of the Palaces of Sports – to Kyiv, Kharkov, Zaporozhye. Since the beginning of hostilities between Ukraine and Russia, this is the first such tour of the top Russian star (tickets cost UAH 390–1390).
The theme of crime is gone from rap. But gange, chicks, gold chains, cool cars and sudden wealth are still trending in hip-hop. This “coolness” attracts teenagers
Moreover, Russian rap troops are preparing to land “to help” Morgenstern in Ukraine. So, on April 17, Pharaoh (read as Pharaoh) will come to Kyiv, May 14 – Noize MC, May 15 – Scryptonite, two concerts at once (June 25 and 26) will be given by the legendary rapper Basta, who took ninth place in the list of the most popular clips among Ukrainians with the track “Don't be sick”. Performances by leading Russian rappers will be held at the Stereo Plaza in the capital (ticket price is UAH 600–800).
“This rap segment is in great demand – these artists are on all our charts. You can turn off Russian channels and MUZ-TV, but you can't turn off the Internet. People stuff it into their playlists, phones. If these artists are in the top positions, then how not to carry them?” asks Yuriy Gulevich, expert of the touring market, co-owner of the Del Arte PR agency. “After all, Ukrainian show business has been lying for nine months already. We need recharge! Our music industry has stopped at the level of the end of 2019. Demand dictates suggestion, and Russian rappers are in trend”.
As for Western stars, it's even more troublesome to bring them now.< /p>
“Last year, the concerts of Andrea Bocelli at the stadium and Lenny Kravitz at the Sports Palace collapsed,” says Gulevich. “And for concerts disrupted due to quarantine (of the same Lenny Kravitz), only 70% of the ticket price was returned, because, as a rule , there is a non-return of artists' fees. Therefore, it is much more risky to deal with Western imports, there are many times more fees and there is no guarantee of transferring the concert of an artist tied to a world tour. If, for any reason, a concert with the same Basta is canceled, then it can be reschedule, in which case the money will not be returned to the viewers”.
Last fall, the local Ukrainian scene, albeit with limitations, came to life. However, the choice was narrow. “When the Kyiv audience has a choice: listen to Boombox for the umpteenth time or go to Basta, they will, of course, choose the latter,” Gulevich believes.
However, the risks for Russian artists remain. These are bans due to the coronavirus and the activity of national radicals threatening to disrupt the performances of Russians they don’t like.
“The organizers understand the covid and political risks. But in September, the same Basta, who spoke in Crimea, was removed a ban on entry into Ukraine,” says Gulevich.
“All these rappers are not” zakvarennyh” artists, – confirms FocusIgor Panasov, music critic and chief editor of Karabas Live. – With the exception of Basta, but he has already been “unblocked” – the ban has ended, as reported by the SBU. The traditional stage that used to be here is “stuffed” – Grigory Leps, Alexander Malinin, Elena Vaenga – they either performed in Crimea, or signed something, or made some statements of a political nature. And these hip-hopers are fine. Morgenstern is the superstar of today, so it's understandable to want to make a quick buck on him.”
Sit-down fan zones
Given the coronavirus situation, there are some peculiarities in modern concerts.
“I doubt that a fan zone will be allowed,” Panasov says. “Olya Polyakova was going to hold a concert at the end of October at the Moscow Sports Palace, but it was postponed – someone in her team got sick with covid. I saw the hall that was prepared: a certain the arrangement of chairs is a seated parterre. By the way, I was at the “Boombox” in the Stereo Plaza in the fall. In the fan zone, tables were arranged for four. With this arrangement, the club can accommodate no more than a thousand people. And how many will fit in the Sports Palace? In the usual while its occupancy is 8 thousand. With seated options – 50%, that is, 4 thousand. How profitable will these concerts be? I don’t know.”
< p>What is so special about Russian rappers that they are in such demand?
Let's take a look at the history of the rap issue.
Rock as an emerging genre dried up by the 1990s. Everyone was waiting for a new genre to appear, in which tens of thousands of musicians would spin as actively as before in rock and jazz. But that did not happen. At first, DJs swooped in like locusts and surrounded old hits, so that any DJ with his computer could come to the club, stand behind the console – and that's it, nothing else is needed!
When I asked why a new genre like jazz and rock didn’t emerge in the 2000s, film composer Eduard Artemiev, who worked in Hollywood (Stalker, Odyssey), answers: “Music is in crisis because the Internet has devoured everything. Art has become a special case of the Internet. “Outstanding personalities have disappeared. The last person was Steve Jobs – not a musician, not a poet, not a writer, but a techie. But the whole world mourned him – from the USA to China and Japan.”
But the role of digital technologies is not so much important as the Internet itself. Technical skills, the ability to master rhythms – house, techno, etc., became more significant than composing talent. how the style arose in the 1980s): they began to recite their text to the same alien, modified melodies. By the 2000s, rap had become mainstream. More precisely, hip-hop is a style at the intersection of rap (recitative) and DJing (electronic rhythms superimposed on borrowed melodies).
Today, out of 500 world pop stars, 250 are rappers. Radio DJ Seva Novgorodtsev explains why this happened: “The word in pop music and rock has long degenerated. They all sang at the level of primitive, childish meanings. It came to children's syllables, there is no need to look for meaning in their songs. “Revived literature. All these California and New York punks began to create verbal images in their songs. Secondly, they made these words rhythmic. The word itself began to turn into music, and their texts began to be taught to children at school. “
In Russia, as well as in the West, rap stars also appeared, who were included in the Forbes lists by income: Basta, Eldzhey, Face, Oxxxymiron.
Rap and Ukraine
When asked why a galaxy of rapper stars did not appear in Ukraine, Ukrainian Russian-speaking rapper YarmaK tried to answer in 2017: “In Ukraine, rap has not become popular, because, in my opinion,” our mova solov “ina” requires a stronger melodic basis . Surzhik is not suitable for rap. Rap is supposed to sound tough, it's a fight, it's a man's conversation. Those who I heard from Ukrainian-speaking rappers lack the harshness and persuasiveness, as it turns out in Russian. As for well-known artists such as “Tartak” and TNMK, this is not pure rap, but diluted with other styles. I sing in Russian. The appearance of a strong Ukrainian-speaking rapper, although possible, is unlikely,” the musician concluded.
In our country, rap is constantly diluted with a female component. Rapper Potap “added” Nastya. Positive – Dodo. But a strong Ukrainian-speaking rapper nevertheless appeared. In 2018, it turned out to be Alyona Alyona, although without obscene language, which is enough in the texts of male rappers.
“There is almost no popular local rap in Ukraine, although this is a global trend. Only Alyona Alyona and the new Jerry Heil with his only hit #Protection_Cancellation. But it's not something that made its way, so to speak, like a man. To catch on!” – says Yuri Gulevich.
As for the Russian rappers who will come to Ukraine, they cover the entire spectrum of our audience. “These five are clearly distributed across the audience: Pharaoh, Morgenstern and Scriptonite – an audience of up to 20. Noize MC and Basta – 35+,” says Igor Panasov. “In fact, they capture all age groups, blocking the entire possible Ukrainian audience.”
In rap, not so much the melody is important as the text, intonation and image of the artist. Plus sound – rhythms and electronic bells and whistles. For example, in the US, the first to hit the mainstream, having become popular in 1994-1998, were criminal rappers who were really connected with gangs and drug trafficking. This is what they sang about. They were believed because half of them actually got shot in the showdown, like the legendary rapper Tupac Shakur (1971-1996). On the territory of the CIS, a thug Russian chanson “came” in parallel, led by the star Mikhail Krug, who was also killed.
Then the topic of crime left rap. But gange, chicks, gold chains, cool cars and sudden wealth are still in the hip-hop trend. This “steepness” and attracts teenagers. For example, the main meaning of the song El Problema by 22-year-old Alisher Morgenstern, which took sixth place in the top of the most popular videos among Ukrainians, is that Alisher and Timati are tormented by a “terrible” problem: should they choose a Ferrari or a Lamborghini? They suffer from this near the pool with half-naked girls, then they go to the casino and still choose … a helicopter.
In short, Morgenstern is the Madonna of rap. He constantly produces a million events for the media and mythologizes his own biography. Has been rapping since the age of 12. As a teenager, he created a pan-rock group in his native Ufa with the scandalous name MMD (“My mother is a virgin”). He was expelled from the pedagogical university for suggesting that a girl have sex there and posted a video about this on the Web. The speech of the rector, when he was expelled, was recorded on a dictaphone and used to create a video.
His recent interview with Yuri Dudyu received a record 23 million views on Youtube. There he admitted that a negative reaction is also good: “True, you can’t hold out on hatred for a long time.” Fresh provocation Mongerstern: one glamorous magazine named him “woman of the year.” In this nomination, he defeated Olga Buzova.
40-year-old Basta (Vasily Vakulenko) is the richest, most respectable and cordial of the five. Has the status of the father of Russian rap. He has two daughters to whom he sings: “Dad is on planes, dad is on trains – we are in different time zones. I am writing these lines to you, daughters – instead of a smiley dot. Skype dad, Face Time dad, What's Up dad “. Romantic. Gives out the hymns of generations: “My game”, “Samsara” (although he does not quite understand the meaning of this Hindu term, judging by the text of his composition). p>
35-year-old Noize MC personifies social rap. Ivan Alekseev is a liberal. Sings about social problems and lack of freedom. The Russian authorities do not favor him. Dangles to Ukrainian festivals. He is Yuri Shevchuk of Rusrepa. A rebel screaming: “I am Prometheus, a titan who sees the future, no one here reads cooler than me.”
30-year-old Scryptonite (Adil Kulmagambetov) is a Kazakh rapper. A gloomy, depressing, but atmospheric artist and a very good poet, who changed topics from the hit about gopniks “Animals” to “Cosmos”, where the following lines are dedicated to his beloved: “But you smell like sixteen, you are like a first date. You smell like that you're drunk, you smell like an unforgettable movement.”
24-year-old Pharaoh is a glamorous rapper with a pushover. Gleb Golubin was seriously involved in football, but as a teenager he came to America, where in a few years he was imbued with hip-hop. He boasts that he is the best of all Russian rappers versed in Western current trends and that everyone is starting to do what “I did exactly five minutes ago, I did not invent anything, such a situation.”
Rap (eng. rap – knock, blow) – a hint at the rhythm of rap, means “talk”, “talk”. Recite melodic recitative.

Beef (English beef – meat, discontent) – enmity between representatives of hip-hop culture. Biff is when one rapper, in order to deliberately humiliate another, writes a song about him in which he expresses a harsh opinion about him.
