Mystery of the Road of the Giants: Thousands of Stone Columns in Northern Ireland were formed in a matter of days

Scientists have concluded that a unique memo was formed under the influence of an event that lasted only a few days.

Giant's Road is a unique landmark in Northern Ireland, which essentially consists of 40,000 hexagonal columns smoothly descending into the sea. Millions of tourists a year come here to see this miracle of nature with their own eyes, writes the Daily Mail.

There are many theories about how the Giant's Road was formed. According to one of them, these amazing stones were built by the mythical giant Finn McCool. However, scientists have their own view on the formation of the Road of the Giants.

One of the most common theories appeared in the 40th year of the last century. Scientists suggest that unusual stone columns were formed over thousands of years under the influence of volcanic lava. It was believed that the river valley was filled with lava accumulated at a greater depth than usual. When the thick layer of lava solidified, it created the conditions for the formation of hexagonal rocks.

However, in a new study, Mike Simms, curator of the Department of Natural Sciences at the National Museum of the State of New York, suggested that the giants' road was actually formed quite in another way, and for this it took her only a few days, not thousands of years.

For the first time this thought visited the scientist back in 2012, when he led an expedition in this area. One of the team members, a young geologist, prompted him to discover. As a result, Simms continued his research and discovered something fascinating.

During the research, the scientist discovered layers of old lava on both sides of the Giant's Road, which were not damaged by erosion. But if this lava-filled depression were indeed a valley, it would cut through the old layers of lava underneath. As a result, the scientist suggested that, in fact, the barely hexagonal stones formed when the lava filled the cavity, and after subsided, the Valley of the Giants formed as a result. As if we took out an unbaked cake from the oven – its middle would have sagged.

According to the scientist, the “stone miracle” was formed about 50-60 million years ago and, apparently, in just a few days.

Note that in 1986 the Road of the Giants became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It consists of 40 thousand hexagonal stones and occupies a little more than 6 kilometers of the coast of Northern Ireland.
