NASA does not yet know why the crash site two craters formed instead of one, but there is one version.

The LRO orbiter has found a crash site on the far side of the Moon, believed to be China's Long March 3C rocket. This is the first case in history when an unplanned collision of a terrestrial space object with an Earth satellite occurred. But it is still not known exactly why there are two craters at the impact site instead of one, according to New Atlas.

Although NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) was able to locate the rocket impact site on the Moon, questions more unanswered. After all, the device took pictures of the surface of the Moon, which show two whole impact craters, while only one should have formed.

As Focus already wrote, March 4, 2022, for the first time in the space history of mankind, the second stage of a space rocket accidentally fell on the far side of the moon. Until now, NASA cannot say exactly what kind of rocket it was, but the main candidate so far is the second stage of the Chinese Long March-3C rocket.

As Focus already wrote, back in January 2022, astronomers reported that an unguided rocket was flying towards the Moon, which should collide with the Earth's satellite in early March. Initially, it was announced that this is the second stage of the Falcon 9 rocket from SpaceX, which launched the DSCOVR into space back in 2015.

A little later, as Focus already wrote, astronomers have changed their minds about what kind of rocket flies to the moon and said that this is most likely the second stage of the Chinese Changzheng-3C rocket, which launched the Chang'e-5T1 vehicle into space in 2014 as part of the Chinese lunar mission.

But at the end of February 2022, Chinese scientists said that the Chinese rocket had nothing to do with an object flying to the Moon, which should collide with the Earth’s satellite on March 4. According to the Chinese side, this rocket burned up in the Earth's atmosphere long ago. That is why the question of what kind of rocket that fell on the moon on March 4 is still open.

NASA initially knew that a rocket fragment would fall on the back side of the Earth's satellite, and therefore this event was not visible from our planet. American scientists have said that we need to wait a few months before one of the lunar orbiters can take a picture of the rocket crash site.

The LRO apparatus was able to capture the crash site of the rocket fragments, which is located near the huge Hertzsprung impact crater (crater diameter 570 km). Scientists were very surprised when they received images confirming that the first ever accidental fall of a space rocket did take place.

The fact is that the pictures showed that not one crater was formed at the crash site, as expected, but two. Rockets have already fallen on the moon, but these were planned falls, and they took place as part of the American Apollo missions 50 years ago. Then, after collisions, only one asymmetrical crater appeared.

Such single craters appeared due to the fact that the main mass of the rocket was concentrated at one end, where the engine is located. After all, the rest of the spent rocket consists of empty fuel tanks.

As the images show, on the Moon, after the fall of the rocket, two crankcases with a diameter of 18 meters and 16 meters were formed. The most interesting thing is that the total diameter of the two craters corresponds to single craters left after the fall of American missiles 50 years ago.

So far, NASA does not know exactly why exactly two craters formed at the rocket crash site. American scientists believe that this could be due to the fact that the alleged Chinese missile had a lot of weight at both of its ends. The Americans have no information about the exact design parameters of the Long March-3C rocket, but they believe that it was this rocket that fell on the moon, and these two craters are proof of this.
