WASHINGTON (AP) – Cuban Yadiel Hernandez hit a solo home run in the ninth – his second home run of the game – and the Washington Nationals beat the Chicago Cubs 6-5 on Sunday.
Hernández had four hits in the game and helped the Nationals bounce back from three homers by the Cubs’ Venezuelan Rafael Ortega.
Washington won two of three series games against Chicago after Friday’s many-player deadline operations that helped both teams win the World Series recently.
Ortega tied the team’s home run mark in a single game. With the opening batting turn, he hit a home run that came out between right and center fields in the 1st inning and then hit two more in the sixth and eighth. The Venezuelan became the first Cubs player to hit three homers in a game since Kris Bryan did it on May 17, 2019, also against the Nationals.
Hernandez led off the ninth inning and homered off rookie Manuel Rodriguez (0-1) and the ball hit the left-field bullpen. Hernandez, who was fourth batter for the first time this season on Saturday, is 18-11 with nine RBIs in 10 games since July 17.
Kyle Finnegan (4-2) pitched the ninth scoreless inning for Washington.
For the Cubs, Venezuelans Rafael Ortega 4-3, three runs scored, five produced; Robinson Chirinos 3-0; Adbert Alzolay 1-0 and Willson Contreras, one scored. The Dominican Sergio Alcántara 3-0.
For the Nationals, the Dominicans Víctor Robles 3-0 and Juan Soyo 2-0, one scored. The Cuban Yadiel Hernández 5-4, two runs scored, three produced. Venezuelans Adrián Sánchez 3-1 and Gerardo Parra 1-1. Puerto Rican René Rivera 3-1, two scored.
