News federal incentives to electrify heavy vehicles

Gross vehicle weight rating must be over 3856 kilograms to qualify.

Ottawa's new program to incentivize businesses and communities to electrify fleets of buses, large pickup trucks, garbage trucks and other medium- and heavy-duty vehicles takes effect Monday.

Environment and Climate Change Minister Steven Guilbeault made the announcement last April.

The program Incentives for Zero-Emission Medium and Heavy-Duty Vehicles (iZEMV) is endowed with nearly $550 million over four years.

The gross vehicle weight rating must be greater than 3856 kilograms to be eligible.

The complete list of medium and heavy vehicles eligible for this subsidy is available on the Transport Canada website.< /p>

The amount of the incentive varies depending on the weight of the vehicle.

For example, a company that buys a 3856 kilogram utility van to make delivery will be eligible for a $10,000 subsidy, while a transportation company will be eligible for a $200,000 subsidy for a 11,794 kg coach.

These rebates may be combined with provincial or territorial incentives.

Only new ZEVs are eligible for the federal incentive and businesses, governments and municipal administrations who operate fleets are eligible for up to 10 incentives, or a maximum of $1,000,000, in the ca of this program in the same year.
