What are the films and series not to be missed this weekend on the streaming platform?
Available on Netflix – Duration: 8 episodes of 30 minutes
Time to discover Grindr
What is it about? When his longtime boyfriend leaves him, a 40-year-old New York real estate agent must face the prospect of starting from scratch and finding someone.
Why do you have to watch it? Meeting between Darren Star, to whom we owe the series Sex and the City (and Emily in Paris, we know) and Jeffrey Richman, the screenwriter from Modern Family, this new sentimental comedy carried by none other than Neil Patrick Harris will tell the desperate story of a struggling man, after 17 years of living together with his ex-boyfriend, to put himself to the seduction market page.
The series therefore promises to give pride of place to the romantic lives of queer men in their fifties; a refreshing take on an era where most LGBTQ+ storylines prefer to focus on self-discovery and adolescent coming out. Now we just have to hope that Uncoupledis not just a collection of outdated clichés and offers entertainment that is simultaneously funny, daring, and intelligent. Even if with Darren Star at the controls, as much to say that doubt is allowed.
Les Justices: rebel cheer squad
Available on Netflix – Duration: 8 episodes of 25 minutes
What is it about? In this teen thriller, three cheerleaders from an upscale private high school fight injustice and reform their former classmates' anti-bullying club.
Why do you have to watch it? You probably don't know Les Judicières, but you will no doubt be delighted to learn that the series has had the right to a spin-off. In The Senshi: Rebel Cheer Squadcreated by Holly Phillips, three friends pick up the momentum of the original series by creating an anti-bullying club at their wealthy high school.
Halfway between Sex Education and Riverdale, Les Judicières: Rebel Cheer Squad shows that cheerleaders have it in them and that they are not the pests they claim to be. The three main characters, to whom the roles have been entrusted to young novices, will do everything to restore justice and make high school the “safe place” it should be. If you like teen dramas and fights between girls, this series is made for you. In addition, the episodes last only 30 min, an increasingly rare quality.
detective conan: zero at tea time
Available on Netflix – Duration: 6 15 minute episodes
What is it about? In this spin-off of “Detective Conan”, a detective who is also a public safety officer and a member of a mysterious organization juggles his three identities.
Why do you have to watch it? Spin-off of the cult manga Detective Conan, written by Gōshō Aoyama, Zero at Tea Time tells the story of a character for the least incongruous; multifaceted, it sometimes assumes the identity of Toru Amuro, the disciple of the famous detective Kogoro Mori, sometimes Rei Furuya, a devoted police officer. And a few more times, the character becomes Bourbon, a mysterious individual dressed in black. Who is he really though? Nobody knows.
Adapted from Takahiro Arai's manga, which currently has six volumes, this new Detective Conan spin-off series is a good way for the platform to surf on the success of the Japanese phenomenon. After partnering with the Tokyo MX channel for the broadcast of Zero at Tea Time(which nevertheless benefited from an exclusivity clause), the Red N was finally able to add the famous spin-off to its catalog. Now it only remains to be seen if this new iteration lives up to the original nostalgic gem.
On Netflix August 1 – Duration: 2h11
What is it about? The rise of a trio of singers composed of Effie, Deena and Lorrell, from the first half of the sixties until the mid-1970s. During a singing competition, these young and promising “Dreamettes” are spotted by ambitious manager Curtis Taylor Jr…
Why do you have to watch it? Because Beyoncé has just released her new album and it is always important to remember that the planetary star has also had a few roles in the cinema and in particular in Dreamgirls. Directed by Bill Condon, director of the last two Twilight and Beauty and the Beast version 2017, Dreamgirls is a musical film adapted from the musical created for Broadway in 1881.
Based on the story of Diana Ross' band, The Supremes, the film tells the story of three singers, performed by Beyoncé, Jennifer Hudson and Anika Noni Rose, their manager, played by Jamie Foxx, and also James “Thunder” Early, an eccentric singer camped by the brilliant Eddie Murphy. It's moving, it's grooving, it's got a lot of fun, in short, it's a must-see.
seven tom cruise films
On Netflix August 1
Which ones? Mission: Impossible, Mission: Impossible 2, Mission: Impossible 3, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Top Gun and Vanilla Sky.
Why do you have to watch them? Because you have an excellent selection of films by Tom Cruise, who is still one of the most exciting actors in contemporary Hollywood. He is one of the few American comedians who can still carry a blockbuster on his own and he recently proved it with the overwhelming success of Top Gun: Maverick. You will be able to see or re-watch the first Top Gun, by Tony Scott, an aviation and friendship film that left its mark on the genre and finds its echo more than ever this year with its sequel.
< p style="text-align: justify;">Perhaps less known than the others, the very good Vanilla Sky by Cameron Crowe (which is a remake of Abre los ojos< /strong>) is probably the most unusual and intriguing object of cinema on the list: a dramatic romance with a dreamlike morning and a memorable soundtrack. Finally, we hardly forget the saga Mission: Impossible, initiated by the film by Brian de Palma and which has now lasted for 26 years without failing to renew itself. The living force of Tom Cruise continues to animate his heart projects without them weakening.
On Netflix August 3 – Duration: 6 episodes
What is it about? Eva, a lonely 17-year-old girl, meets a gang of teenagers who, to escape boredom, take a group of Icelotropine, a drug they steal from a clinic specializing in mental disorders. sleep. A little blue pill that allows them to dive together into dreamlike trips, between dream and reality. But as Eva joins the gang thanks to one of them, the teenagers' dreams turn into contagious nightmares and the border with reality crumbles.
Why do you have to watch it? Because even if a program responds to questionable premises, it's always good to support French-language productions. New Franco-Belgian series from the Netflix platform, Endless Night is designed as a vast dreamlike journey between fantasies and reality, before quickly turning into a nightmare.
First serial experience for French filmmaker David Perrault (Our heroes are dead tonight), this mini-series with horrifying accents (although intended for teenagers) promises, according to its director “an emotional Roller Coaster, exhilarating, moving, and sometimes scary strong>”. Engaging premises that seem to guarantee a phantasmagorical atmosphere while confronting its panel of characters, interpreted by a promising young cast, with a real dive into troubled waters.
fast & feel love
On Netflix August 4 – Duration: 2h12
What is it about? A cup-stacking champion tries every means to preserve his neglected love life while defending his title as the world's fastest stacker.
Why do you have to watch it? Because its absolutely random, but very funny pitch mixed with its romantic, but cynical style is clearly worth looking into.Fast & Feel Love was released last spring in Thailand and was praised (notably by Samuel Jamier, director of the New York Asian Film Festival) as a hilarious comedy with no age, gender or cultural barriers.
At the same time parodic, crazy and voluntarily absurd, Fast & Feel Love seems to give off a humor, albeit very schoolboy, but generous. If we often miss small curiosities because of a lack of distribution, it would be a shame to miss a film whose story is that of a man who dreams of being the fastest stacker of cups in the world.
