Lagos (Nigeria), December 13: Authorities in Lagos, Nigeria’s economic hub and the epicenter of COVID-19 cases, on Saturday confirmed that state governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

The governor tested positive after close contact with a person feeling unwell and testing positive for the COVID-19 infection, said Akin Abayomi, the state commissioner for health, in a statement. Sanwo-Olu became aware of his status after a PCR test performed on Friday confirmed that he has been infected with the virus which is supported by mild symptoms and fatigue typical of a mild case of COVID-19, the statement said.

The governor is receiving treatment and is being closely monitored at home by the very experienced state COVID-19 clinical team, it added, noting that Sanwo-Olu is doing well on treatment and rest.

“We are confident that he will recover quickly and clear the virus,” the statement said. Lagos, where the index COVID-19 case in Nigeria was recorded on Feb. 27, has remained the epicenter for the pandemic in the country, with 24,614 cases.

Sanwo-Olu became the latest governor to test positive for the virus following the governors of Ondo, Benue, Delta, Ebonyi, and Kaduna who recently confirmed their COVID-19 status.
