The Quebec government has no intention “for now” of contributing to the financing of a possible high-speed train (TGV) between Quebec City and Toronto.
This is what Premier François Legault suggested Tuesday during a press briefing on another subject. When asked by a journalist whether the Quebec government could put money into the project, he replied: “For now, it’s the federal government that has to put the money in.”
The Premier also said he was excited about the project. “This is excellent news for the people of Quebec City, for the people of Trois-Rivières, for Montreal.”
On Monday, Radio-Canada revealed that the Trudeau government would unveil a TGV project in the coming weeks. Information that he has not wanted to confirm since.
The idea of a TGV has come back into the news sporadically in the past. However, in 2021, Ottawa had favoured the idea of a high-frequency train (TGF), a slower but also less expensive infrastructure.
Quebec, for its part, had not hidden its preference for a TGV project. “Between a TGF and a TGV, it is certain that what we favour is a TGV,” declared Transport Minister Geneviève Guilbault in 2023.
