Igor KOZLOV, “the FACTS”
The Russian company Norilsk Nickel, which is one of the world’s largest producers of nonferrous metals, the second time in the last month was at the center of the scandal. At the end of may on the territory of CHP-3 of JSC “NTEK” (enters into group of companies “Norilsk Nickel”) depressurization of one of the tanks due to subsidence of pile Foundation and a slick of fuel and lubricants. According to Rosprirodnadzor, spilled about 20 thousand tons of oil products which got into the Creek and an Unnamed river Daldykan and Granary, and from thence into the lake Pyasino in the tundra.
The accident at the CHPP-3 has become the second largest in the history of Russia after the spill, 94 thousand tons of oil in the Komi Republic in 1994. Then for the total elimination of consequences of the ecological catastrophe took six years.
Now 16 June, the government reported that “the active phase of collecting fuel and water mixture from the surface of the river in the affected area was completed”. Currently, work is continuing on the purification of small water bodies.
The fact of the accident at TPP-3 initiated four criminal cases, arrested the foreman of the plant. The incident was declared an emergency situation at the Federal level.
Haven’t put in the “Norilsk Nickel” to breathe a sigh of relief as came the second scandal, also directly associated with the environment. Journalists of “Novaya Gazeta” together with the local ecologist Vasily by Ryabinina on 27 June announced that they found a pipe on which an enterprise of Norilsk Nickel Talnakh concentrator secretly poured harmful substances in the tundra zone.
We are talking about the so-called “tailings” the waste water containing elevated levels of heavy metals. Pumping tailings was carried out by the factory is illegal. The pipe has sprung a leak. The harmful substances are trapped in Kharaulakh river, which flows into the lake Pyasino. While ecologists are unable to assess the damage caused to nature and water, but it is obvious that it is huge. “Novaya Gazeta” reported another environmental disaster.
“Nornikel” was forced to recognize the fact plum “tails.” The company tried to blame everything on Perepelytsia the sump at the factory. However, the place went to check the Prosecutor’s office and representatives of Rosprirodnadzor.
They arrived just in time to see how a special team hastily dismantled an illegal pipe. Working was so nervous and hurried that the bulldozer involved in the dismantling, ran into the car of Prosecutor!
“Nornikel” hoped to reduce everything to the official investigation, however, the noise is too loud. Russia’s investigative Committee began its review.
The press service of the company hastened to make the statement: “it Was admitted gross violation of the rules of operation of the tailings of the factory. The responsible person suspended from the performance of their duties”.
Despite the scandal, the attempts to hush up the case, do not stop. About the outrageous incident was reported to the Moscow city Duma Deputy Sergei Mitrokhin (“Yabloko”), which came to Norilsk to get the journalists of “Novaya Gazeta” on 13 samples of water and soil, which they obtained on the location of the leak “tails.” When Mitrokhin tried to get on a plane with these samples, it was stopped by employees of security service of Norilsk Alykel airport.
They told the Deputy that his Luggage are flammable substances. Allegedly received an anonymous call. Then right Mitrokhin said that the export of any samples required permission of the security service of “Norilsk Nickel”. He was indignant and asked what attitude the company has towards the airport. Mitrokhin said: “We — this is “Nornikel”.
The Deputy found out that the airport really is the property of Norilsk Nickel.
By the way, the company’s main shareholders are Russian billionaires Vladimir Potanin and Oleg Deripaska. Deripaska, who is often called “Putin’s purse” over the past couple of years has been at the centre of scandals. He was among the first Russian businessmen included in the sanctions lists of the USA.
