Algerian judoka withdraws to avoid Israeli
8.55 am: Algerian judoka Fethi Nourine has withdrawn from the Tokyo Olympics after the draw. He may face Israeli Tohar Butbul in the second round. He doesn’t want that for political reasons.
“I worked hard to get here,” Nourine told Algerian television. “However, I support the Palestinians in their conflict with Israel. This case is much more important than my own ambitions. My decision is therefore final.”
At the 2019 world championships, also in Tokyo, Nourine withdrew for the same reason.
Naomi Osaka starts Games a day later
08.37 am: Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka starts the Olympics a day later than planned. At the request of the organizing committee, the top player from the host country will not play for the first time on Saturday, but on Sunday. A reason has not yet been given.
Osaka will play against the Chinese Saisai Zheng in the first round. It will be her first match in about two months, after she took a rest due to mental problems.
