The production of the Opel Insignia liftback and station wagon will be stopped before the end of this year. A new generation of the flagship model of the brand is not planned. This is reported by the German edition of Automobilwoche.

The Stellantis concern decided to liquidate the Opel Insignia ahead of schedule – initially it was planned to be produced before 2024 or 2025. This is due to the sharp drop in demand for D-class models.

If 137,700 Insignias were sold in 2009, a little over 20 were sold in 2021 thousand. The model's twins, the American Buick Regal and the Australian Holden Commodore, have already been discontinued.

In addition, the fact that the Insignia was developed under the wing of the General Motors concern, before Opel was sold, played a role. The fact is that the model cannot be equipped with hybrid installations from Stellantis.

Family buyers are increasingly choosing crossovers – this is the model that will replace the Insignia. It will be presented in 2025 and will be offered exclusively in hybrid and electric versions.

In the meantime, the plant's workshops in Rüsselsheim, Germany, will be redesigned for the production of the new Opel Astra. Demand for this model is growing and additional production capacity is needed.
