Paid versions of ChatGPT, Gemini and others are going through the roof in 2024

Most AI tools like ChatGPT or Gemini are available for free. However, they usually offer paid versions that allow access to more advanced language models, additional features or even a higher usage limit. And clearly, more and more Internet users are convinced by these paid offers, despite the availability of free versions.

In any case, this is what is suggested by the annual report from Sensor Tower, which tracks Internet users' spending on mobile platforms. According to the report, consumer spending on AI apps like ChatGPT and Gemini will be nearly $1.1 billion in 2024, a 200% increase from 2023. And if this growth rate continues, AI could enter the top 10 app categories that generate the most money on mobile.

Furthermore, it is important to note that this report only concerns spending on mobile applications. However, AI labs generally also offer their services on a web version or on computer apps. And on these interfaces, billing does not go through stores like the App Store or Google Play Store. Otherwise, Sensor Tower data also reveals that Internet users spent 7.7 billion hours on artificial intelligence apps, and that applications that mention AI were downloaded 17 billion times in 2024.

Revenues that could still explode in 2025

By 2025, ChatGPT’s mobile revenue could explode. As you may already know, thanks to a collaboration between Apple and OpenAI, ChatGPT is integrated with Siri and Apple’s writing tools, on devices compatible with Apple Intelligence. And this should boost the paid version of ChatGPT, since the benefits of this paid version can be used directly via the integration with Siri.

And Apple is considering other partnerships inspired by this collaboration with OpenAI. For example, the Cupertino firm is ready to work with Google, so that its Gemini model can also be integrated with Siri. These partners benefit Apple, since in addition to improving the experience for iPhone users, the firm earns commissions when users take out a paid subscription through its payment system.

  • In its report on the mobile application market, Sensor Tower indicates that in 2024, AI apps will generate $1.1 billion
  • This corresponds to a 200% increase compared to Internet users' spending on this category of apps in 2023
  • In addition, thanks to Apple Intelligence, the revenues of certain applications could still explode in 2025
