One of the advantages of Android is Google's flexibility. Indeed, if the Mountain View firm offers a default assistant, you are free to replace it with another artificial intelligence. And precisely, for those who want to personalize the experience on their devices, the company Perplexity has just launched its own assistant for Android smartphones, which will therefore be able to replace Gemini or Google Assistant.

As a reminder, Perplexity is a startup specializing in artificial intelligence that has developed a competing product to Google's search engine, based on large language models. And now, in addition to this search engine, it also offers a real AI assistant for smartphones. This one is available in French and to use it, simply install the app “Perplexity – Ask Anything” from the Play Store and replace Google Asisstant or Gemini with Perplexity Assistant in Android settings.

What is this new assistant capable of ?

First of all, like Perplexity’s search engine, its assistant is able to go on the web to answer the questions you ask. The fact that it is an assistant also makes accessing the AI easier, since you will only need to use the button that normally serves to activate Gemini or Google Assistant to open Perplexity Assistant.

But the biggest development for the startup is that it no longer just answers questions, but can now use AI to help the user get things done. “The assistant uses reasoning, search, and apps to help you with everyday tasks, whether it’s simple questions or multi-app actions. You can book dinner, find a forgotten song, call a driver, write emails, set reminders, etc.”, says the company.

The assistant has a good understanding of natural language. And you can, for example, use it to ask for directions (you will be redirected to Google Maps), a VTC (you will be redirected to Uber), a podcast or even a YouTube video. Another interesting feature: Perplexity can also activate the camera, which will allow you to do a live visual search. For example, you can point the camera at a PC and ask the AI what model it is.

Improvements in sight

In addition, Perplexity already plans improvements to this assistant. For example, the current version can summarize unread emails, provided that they are in the notifications. However, the startup's CEO indicates that it is working on read access to Gmail and the user's calendar.

It remains to be seen It remains to be seen whether this new assistant will be able to compete with Google's Gemini assistant, which recently beefed up its extensions system. These extensions allow Gemini to perform actions on other applications, without opening them.

  • Perplexity, one of the most promising startups in the field of AI, has already developed a competitor to Google's search engine
  • And now, it also offers an assistant that can replace Google Assistant or Gemini on Android smartphones
  • The AI can answer the user's questions, or start tasks on other applications
