Guillermo del Toro finally unveils the first trailer for Pinocchio, his very first animated film.
Since its release in 1881, The Adventures of Pinocchio, a children's novel by Italian Carlo Collodi, has seen many film adaptations, whether in live-action or animation, from the beginning of the 20th century. But it was in 1940 that the character of Pinocchio gained popularity, thanks to the Disney animated feature, which will very soon see the right to its live-action remake directed by Robert Zemeckis starring Tom Hanks as Geppetto, slated for release September 2022 on Disney+.
But 2022 will also see the birth of another adaptation, since the famous master of fantasy Guillermo del Toro directed Pinocchio, his very first animated film, produced and distributed by Netflix. After announcing that his version of Pinocchio would be darker and more political, it's time for del Toro to unveila first trailer, which depicts a strange and dreamlike universe.

This trailer therefore unveils Jiminy Cricket as a storyteller that s heartbreaking announcement, as evidenced by the first seconds which evoke the death of Geppetto's son. It is therefore devastated by this tragic disappearance that the old man decides to create from scratch the wooden puppet that we know well, but whose we are promised to discover the true story.
The animation method used, that of stop motion, participates in the very beautiful graphic rendering, which recalls the illustrations of children's stories, and more precisely those of Gris Grimly, the designer who was in charge of the magnificent reissue of the novel in 2002 and who participated in the scenario of the film. These first images confirm that Guillermo, even when he explores unknown territory, is capable of great things. It should also be noted that Mark Gustafson, who is co-directing the film, also worked on Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox as animation director.
Focused on the magic and the extraordinary character of the existence of the puppet, the trailer reveals also the voice of Ewan McGregor, who plays the fearless Jiminy Cricket. But he is not the only star in the cast, since we will also be able to hear the voices of Christoph Waltz, Tilda Swinton, Cate Blanchett, Ron Perlman, David Bradley and Finn Wolfhard. The puppet is played by the young Gregory Mann.
If this trailer is very promising, we hope that a second will reveal the other characters, notably Grand Coquin, the vicious fox, but also Crapule, the naughty boy. Pinocchio will arrive on Netflix in December 2022, just in time for the Christmas holidays.
