The found animal demonstrated the ability to regenerate during life, which is the first documented case in ancient sea lilies.

In Ethiopia, fossilized remains of a species of sea lily previously unknown to science, whose age is estimated at 150 million years, are reported by the scientific journal Royal Society Open Science. For a detailed study, the fossil was taken to the paleontological laboratory of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the Silesian University in Katowice. After studying it, Polish paleontologists named a new species in honor of the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky – Ausichicrinites zelenskyyi.

Scientists explained that the animal was named “in honor of the sixth and current President of Ukraine Vladimir Alexandrovich Zelensky for the courage and bravery shown in protecting free Ukraine”.

Ausichicrinites zelenskyyi belongs to the subgroup of echinoderms, this is the first representative of the echinoderm of the Jurassic period, which was found on the African continent.

The fossil turned out to be in good condition, so scientists were able to establish that the found animal had 10 long arms and sharp tentacle-like claws, with which the creature grabbed the seabed.

The animal showed signs of injury, apparently Ausichicrinites zelenskyyi survived the attack, losing one arm. The recovered specimen showed signs of regrowth of an injured arm, the first documented example of regeneration in a fossil crinoids. Modern echinoderms can quickly restore lost limbs.

Crinoids belong to the class of echinoderms – invertebrates that live in salt water, found in all regions of the world's oceans. Their sizes range from a few centimeters to 2.5 m.
