Power 530 hp and acceleration to “hundreds” in 4 seconds – Focus tested the electric Porcshe Taycan in the 4S version. What else impresses Porsche's first electric car, read in our review.

Silence, only the rustle of huge 21-inch wheels. The fact that the car is moving and moving fast is reported only by sight, but not by hearing. I press the accelerator pedal harder, and then a slight hum of electric motors appears, even stronger – and the Porsche Taycan electric car flies forward with some kind of cosmic acceleration. I wonder what Ferdinand Porsche would say when he saw this brainchild of his design office, because he developed an electric car back in 1898.

Porsche Taycan review

Lohner-Porsche had two 2.5 hp electric motors. each could accelerate to a decent speed at that time – 40 km/h. The test Porsche Taycan in the 4S configuration has a total electric motor power of 530 “horses”, accelerates to hundreds in 4 seconds, and its maximum speed is limited by engineers at around 260 km/h. In the  Turbo S modification, acceleration is even 2.8 seconds, which is one fraction of a second faster than the Tesla Model X Performance, – Ferdinand would be proud of the Porsche Taycan electric car.

This is the first mass-produced Porsche electric car, it was launched on the market in 2020, and in March last year, the model arrived in Ukraine. During the year, 89 & nbsp; cars were sold, despite the fact that the answer to the question “how much does the Porsche Taykan cost” starts at 2 million 584 thousand 320 UAH (€76 800) for the basic version. And the price of the test Porsche Taycan 4S 2021 is UAH 4 million 867 thousand, or approximately €144 thousand, and only the additional equipment in it – one and a half million in national currency.

The Taycan, as befits a Porsche, first impresses with its appearance. This is an almost five-meter sedan (length – 4963 mm) with a very wide hood (width – 1966 mm) and low ground clearance, which is 130 mm in the base, but can drop to 116 mm or rise to & nbsp; 148 & nbsp; mm, in depending on air suspension settings. This year there was also a version of the Cross Turismo body, reminiscent of a station wagon. In this version, the car is slightly higher and has a full-fledged plastic body kit.

Dramatically sloping rooflines, a sharp profile of the “nose” low to the ground, huge swollen wings that can be seen even from the cabin – these are the most striking features of the Taycan's sporty-aggressive appearance. 21-inch wheels with tungsten carbide brake discs, LED matrix headlights, frameless door glass – this car can be viewed for a long time, admiring every detail, which was done by passers-by and other drivers throughout the test drive.

The interior of the Porsche Taycan impresses with its combination of high-tech and familiar Porsche luxury. A jet-black 16.8-inch digital instrument panel curves intricately above the steering wheel, on the sides of it are touch-sensitive buttons for adjusting optics¸ suspension, shock absorbers and other settings. There are five screens in the cabin, all of them are touch-sensitive – in addition to the dashboard, these are displays in the center of the console and opposite the front seat passenger (optional, works when the seat is occupied), a touchpad at the bottom of the console and a small climate system screen for rear row passengers . Absolutely all functions are controlled by touch, and you need to press the “buttons” quite strongly – so they are protected from accidental touch. There are physical buttons only on the steering wheel, which also has the traditional Porsche “puck” for switching driving modes.

At the same time, chic leather trim with stamping on the headrests of the seats has not gone away. The seats themselves – deep sports seats with noticeable lateral support, 14 position settings, heating, ventilation and massages – fit perfectly into the interior of the Taycan.

The back row is comfortable for two passengers, although three can sit structurally. There, of course, there is not much space, a sloping roof hangs low overhead, which, however, is compensated by the fact that it is completely transparent and gives fellow travelers a panoramic view of the sky. 

Power reserve Porsche Taycan

The range of the Porsche Taycan 4S is between 386 and 463 km, depending on the driving mode and other conditions. The huge 93.4 kWh Performance Plus lithium-ion battery is located in the floor of the car and weighs more than 600 kg, so it is not surprising that the car's curb weight is about 2.3 tons. 

The Porsche Taycan is the first electric car with an 800-volt traction electrical system (Tesla and other mass-produced electric vehicles have this figure on average half as much), which in practice means unique characteristics today: the charging speed allows you to replenish the range by 100 km from a source of constant current of 800 V and 270 kW can be done in five minutes! And the energy reserve up to 80% of charging the same power is replenished in 22.5 minutes. Another question is that the IONITY network can boast of such stations in Europe, and in Ukraine the project of an official dealer to create a high-speed charging network is now underway: it will be possible to charge from 5 to 80% on them in just 25 min.

In the meantime, from the options available to us, a current source of 400 V and 50 kW charges the battery up to 80% in 93 minutes, from the most common 11 kW station in Ukraine, the electric car is fully charged in 8 hours.

The manufacturer promises a battery life of 15 years, while 8 years or 160,000 kilometers are covered by the warranty. Curiously, according to Porsche engineers, Taycan can be used at any temperature, down to -40 degrees Celsius. However, you need to understand that all the parameters of the battery -both energy consumption and recharging time -will be lower at sub-zero temperatures.

Current speed

The dynamics of the Taycan, which may even seem frightening to an untrained person, are provided by two permanent magnet synchronous electric motors on the front and rear axles. In a quiet driving mode, the front motor mainly works, the rear, more powerful, is connected during acceleration.

The same space breakthrough is achieved by a two-stage planetary gearbox on the rear axle (the front one is rotated by a single-stage planetary gearbox ): with a sharp start from a standstill and up to about 70 & nbsp; km/h, it holds a lower stage. 

The Taycan has an unusually heavy, plump steering wheel and very tight suspension – a must for such dynamic performance. In general, this car is for a driver who likes full involvement in the process of driving a car, there are no autopilots here and are not expected. Electronic driver assistance options are adaptive cruise control, lane change assist (mirror monitoring), lane keeping, all-round visibility.

Porsche Taycan pampers with chips that will definitely be remembered by everyone who met the luxury German. Approach the car with the key – and the door handles smoothly leave the niches: welcome! You open the door – and the Porsche logo is projected onto the asphalt. And the hatches of the charging ports (the Taycan has two of them – for high-speed charging and normal) open if you pass your hand under the sensor. And one more thing: if you still lack the sound of a Porsche sports engine, the computer synthesizes it for you when you activate the corresponding option in the menu.

It is difficult for this car to make our traditional verdict of pros and cons. Because every possible minus & nbsp; is part of the concept of the model. Expensive? For the target audience wealthy fans of Porsche and high technology no. Low ground clearance? So basically it's a sports car. Of course, this is not a car “for every day” & nbsp; – it is a magnificent, insanely expensive and fantastically innovative result of the evolution of the ideas of Ferdinand Porsche.
