A strong earthquake of magnitude 5.6 on the Indonesian island of Java claimed the lives of at least 46 people, about 700 were injured. This was reported by the BBC radio station, citing data from local authorities.
According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred in the city of Chianjur in West Java at a depth of 10 kilometers. The tremors were felt in the Indonesian capital Jakarta, about 100 km from the epicenter.
The governor of West Java, Ridwan Kamil, claimed 700 wounded. According to him, the number of injured and dead may increase, there are many people at the scene, and a landslide blocked one of the sites.
Some buildings are completely destroyed, garbage is scattered on the streets of the city. The earthquake happened in a densely populated area where houses were poorly built, journalists noted.
Rescuers tried to evacuate people from collapsed buildings, they managed to save a woman and a child.
According to the head of the administration of Chianjur German Suherman , most of the people trapped under the rubble received broken bones.
The National Disaster Mitigation Agency announced damage to a dozen buildings in the city, including a hospital and a boarding school.
