“We can’t afford to have a Roxham 2.0,” Premier François Legault said Tuesday morning, during the first meeting of his Quebec-United States ministerial working group.
The committee was set up following the election of President Donald Trump, who repeatedly mentioned his intention to carry out mass deportations of illegal immigrants during the presidential campaign.
In a short statement before his ministerial group’s meeting at the Executive Council offices, he discussed scenarios on immigration policies, such as changes to the Safe Third Country Agreement.
That’s when he mentioned Roxham Road, the path that thousands of people from the United States have taken to enter Canada irregularly.
His committee is also looking at responses to potential customs duties that could be imposed on products from Quebec and Canada.
