Today, many people think that Neanderthals ate only berries and raw meat. But it is not so. Scientists have found that they were real gourmets, writes The Gurdian.
Findings in northern Iraq helped in this. There they found burnt food remains in the cave complex. They are proof of sophisticated cooking in Neanderthal circles.
Professor of cultural paleoecology Chris Hunt and his colleagues attempted to reconstruct the food that Neanderthals ate. This was helped by the remains of food from the Shanidar cave – a settlement of this type of people north of Baghdad. As a result of the experiment, we got something like pancakes with tortillas.
An electron microscope was used to analyze food debris. Food fragments from a cave in southern Greece also helped in the experience. Taken together, the results suggested that Neanderthals had a varied diet. In addition, cooking was divided into several stages.
Scientists were able to provide evidence of pounding legume seeds. This is indicated by the found “mixtures”. They are believed to have been eaten by both Neanderthals and early modern humans. As a rule, wild nuts and herbs were mixed with legumes.
Hunt suggested that Neanderthals could soak their seeds in patches of animal skin, because they did not have pots. They also didn't remove the outer shell. Perhaps this is how the Neanderthals retained natural flavors.
Assuming they crushed the seeds using local stones, the end product could also be somewhat gritty.
“After trying out the reproduced recipe, I I think we can understand why Neanderthal teeth were in such a degraded state,” added Chris Hunt.
