Record-high population growth in Canada in 2022

C' is the first time in the country's history that the population has increased by more than one million people in a 12-month period.

Canada has experienced record population growth of 1,050,110 new people registered in 2022, bringing its total population to almost 40 million.

As of January 1 2023, Statistics Canada estimated the Canadian population at 39,566,248 people.

This is the first time in the country's history that the population has increased by more than one million people over a 12 month period. This is the highest growth rate (+2.7%) for 65 years (+3.3%).

In 1957, the Canadian population had made a record jump due in particular to the high number of births. In addition to the post-war baby boom, the strong immigration of refugees generated by the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 had an impact on the Canadian demographic portrait.

In 2022, growth of Canada's population is largely due to international migration. Indeed, almost all of the recorded growth (95.9%) results from migratory movements.

Canada is the G7 country with the strongest population growth over the past year. It is also the one with the highest growth rate among the countries of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

If the current rate is maintained in the years future, Statistics Canada predicts that the country's population will double in about 26 years.

The aging of the Canadian population and the shortage of labor in certain crucial sectors of the economy largely explain the population increase resulting from international migration.

Next the rise in its immigration targets, Canada welcomed 437,180 immigrants and 607,782 non-permanent residents in 2022. Both are the largest increase ever in the country . It is also the first time that the number of non-permanent residents has exceeded that of immigrants in the same year.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada processed a record number of immigration applications over the past year.

Canadian provinces and territories all recorded a increase in the number of non-permanent residents in their territory. This phenomenon is explained by an increase in work and study permits granted as well as in the number of asylum seekers. Ukrainians who fled war following the Russian invasion in February 2022 are among the many who have settled in Canada.

This is during of the fourth quarter of 2022, between the beginning of October and the end of December, that Canada experienced the highest rate of increase of the year. The population then increased by 273,893 people (+0.7%), unheard of since 1956.

Estimates presented by Statistics Canada are based on the 2016 Census. Population estimates based on 2021 Census data will be released next September.
