On Saturday, October 22, Austrian billionaire and businessman Dietrich Mateschitz died at the age of 78. He was the founder of the energy drink company Red Bull, as well as the teams of two Formula 1 teams and the owner of football clubs. His death is reported on the official Formula 1 website.
According to media reports, recently Mateschitz was seriously ill and no longer appeared in public. A few weeks ago, his health deteriorated.
In 2021, his fortune was estimated at $ 26.9 billion, which made Mateschitz the richest person in Austria.
In 2022, Forbes estimated the fortune of a businessman in $ 20.2 billion. He took 51st place in the list of the richest people in the world.
Until the mid-80s, Mateschitz worked as marketing director of the German company Blendax, which was known for its shampoo production.
He founded Red Bull in 1984, when he was just forty years old. He later said that in 1982 he was on a business trip in Thailand and tried the local energy drink Kraetin Daeng (“Red Bull”). He liked the power plant so much that he found the Thai businessman Chaleo Yuvidya, who created it, and invited him to become partners. Already together they changed the recipe and launched the product on the market in 1987.
The Austrian was able to turn Red Bull into a market leader in energy drinks. The brand was constantly demonstrated during extreme sports competitions, steadily gaining a number of fans.
The owner of the Formula 1 teams
At the end of 2004, the businessman bought the Jaguar team and renamed it the team Red Bull. In 2010-2013, it won the Constructors' Championship.
In 2006, Mateschitz bought the Minardi team, which he gave the new name Toro Rosso (which later became Alpha Tauri).
In addition, the Austrian was the owner of several football clubs – Red Bull Salzburg, New York Red Bulls and Red Bull Leipzig.
