According to L’Equipe relations between Egan Bernal and the British formation have cooled considerably after a disappointing Vuelta a España. Bernal finished sixth at more than thirteen minutes from Roglic and lost his white jersey to Gino Mäder in the final weekend. His teammate Adam Yates also finished next to the podium with a fourth place.
The French sports newspaper writes that a difference in vision has arisen. Bernal would live at odds with sporting director Matteo Tosatto. The Italian could not choose between Yates and Bernal in Spain, as a result of which the cohesion in the team – including Dylan van Baarle – disappeared.
Bernal – winner in the Giro d’Italia earlier this year – is said to have taken a break. This makes it questionable whether the Colombian will still climb on the bike in competition this season. He will fit for the World Cup in Leuven next week anyway, although the Flemish course is not tailored to the classification rider anyway.
Bernal has a two-year contract with INEOS. Still, Israel-Start Up Nation would be happy to offer the 24-year-old driver a contract. His old teammate Chris Froome also drives with that team.
Giuseppe Acquadro, Bernal’s advocate, denies the rumours: “I can’t predict the future, but Egan is happy in the team for now.”
