Resident Evil: after the flop, the sequel saved by success on VOD?

Will Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City get a sequel after its box office flop? Success on VOD could apparently help.

Everyone loves to hate the Resident Evil sagaby Paul W.S. Anderson, but everyone has been to see the adventures of Milla Jovovich in the land of zombies, clones, dragons and series Z twists. In six films spread over fifteen years, the franchise has thus established itself as an economic model very clever, thanks to relatively modest budgets (between 30 and 60 million), and a solid success in theaters. Record of operations: more than 1.2 billion at the box office.

Impossible for the (very) average Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City to escape comparison. Launched right after Resident Evil: The Final Chapterto continue to exploit the Capcom brand, with the obvious hope of a new franchise, the reboot released in 2021 took a little cold shower at the box office.

< p>But the hope (or despair) of a sequel may not be dead according to Tom Hopper, Wesker's interpreter in the film.

In the middle of the promo marathon of Umbrella Academyseason 3, the mirrored wardrobe named Tom Hopper spoke with Screen Rant about wanting to return in a sequel…which might not be so unlikely:

” All I know is that the movie was a real hit on the VOD side, a lot of people sat down at home to watch it, so I think they're very happy at Constantin and Sony, all the people who manage it.”

As a reminder, Sony had reacted to the non-success of Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon Cityby releasing it on VOD, at 19.99 dollars, just a few weeks after its theatrical release. A maneuver halfway between industrial desperation and commercial intelligence, which sacrificed the last crumbs of cinema exploitation to bet on the curiosity of the public in slippers.

The strategy may have paid off , and it will indeed be necessary to count on the VOD and company so that the accounts of Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City are not as ridiculous as the face of the final boss of the film. With an official budget of 25 million, the film has not even reached 42 million at the box office, of which only 17 on the domestic side. Sheer disaster was averted, but no doubt Sony and Constantin were hoping for more.

Why? Because Paul Jovovich and Milla W.S. Anderson's saga has garnered more love and dollars. In 2002, the first Resident Evil kicked off with over 100 millionat the worldwide box office (for a budget of 33 million). Apart from a little slack on Retribution, the saga has continued to inflate its revenues, while limiting budgets. Final Chapter thus exploded records with more than 312 million, for a budget of 40. A small feat since the film had wallowed at the domestic box office with the worst score of the saga… before catching up with a box in China (nearly 160 million).

In comparison, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City therefore looks like an old half-rotten corpse. The fact that it was deprived of a Chinese release certainly didn't help, but it doesn't explain everything. No more than the relative quality of the film, since if box office rhymed with good film, the world would have a completely different look.

In any case, do not panic (although): there will always be a new Netflix seriesResident Evil from July 14, and a remake of the game Resident Evil 4 in 2023.
