Although many sections have disappeared, the old routes have an untold impact on the economy of the regions today.
The Roman Empire is known for many achievements. But the most famous of them to this day are roads. Now it has become known that they are not only valuable from an archaeological point of view, but also associated with economic prosperity, writes Science Alert.
Thousand-year-old routes still influence the present, according to a new study. And if you live along one of these roads, then it is probably a rich area.
Interestingly, the Romans used to build roads for military purposes. A variety of routes were necessary for the movement of armies. However, later they began to connect large cities. Much has since disappeared.
But economist Ola Allson of the University of Gothenburg in Sweden notes that the Roman case is unique. Although Roman roads may have disappeared entirely, they contributed to the concentration of cities and the development of the economy. And this is not surprising, because in II Art. not. the Romans had already laid 80,000 km of roads.
The new study was conducted using satellite imagery. Regions of economic activity were shown through lighting. The analysis was able to obtain a “sustainability model” between modern economic zones and the missing Roman roads.
At the same time, scientists warn that it is not known if the routes flourished before. But the claim that roads contributed to the spread of wealth and trade is true. Allson noted that the study is quite interesting, because the fall of the Roman Empire could be an opportunity to change economic structures.
But in North Africa and the Middle East, the picture is different. There is no connection between the old routes and the modern ones in these regions. The economic centers also do not coincide. Researchers attribute this to the lack of market towns.
The results of the new study are planned to be used to build future infrastructure. It is believed that the construction of new railway lines in Sweden will be able to give an economic boost to some communities.
