Saskatchewan had the highest homicide rate in Canada in 2021
Statistics Canada counts 53 victims of Indigenous origin among the 70 homicides recorded in Saskatchewan in 2021.
Saskatchewan is the province with the highest homicide rate per 100,000 population in 2021, according to Statistics Canada.
Last year, 70 homicides were reported in the province, which is equivalent to 5.93 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants according to the data released Monday by Statistics Canada.
This represents a 9% increase from 2020 at the provincial level, while a 3% increase was observed nationally over the same period.
It is also the third year in a row that Saskatchewan has topped the list of provinces with the highest homicide rates in Canada.
Regina is also , the city with the highest homicide rate in Canada in 2021 with 5.67 murders per 100,000 population. It is ahead of Thunder Bay and Winnipeg.
Of the homicides recorded in Saskatchewan in 2021, 25 were linked to street gangs.
The province has also seen a significant increase in homicides committed with a firearm.
In addition, in 2021, 77% of murder victims in Saskatchewan were of Aboriginal descent. While making up only about 18% of Saskatchewan's population during this period, the homicide rate is 16 times higher among Aboriginal people compared to the non-Aboriginal population.
