Schroeder met with Putin and called the idea of a military return of Crimea absurd

The ex-Chancellor of Germany announced the desire of the Russian Federation to sit down at the negotiating table with Ukraine, but noted that Crimea is allegedly Russian, with the exception of the Crimean Tatars. He expressed doubt that Putin would be able to abandon the peninsula.

Former German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder visited Russia last week and said he met with Vladimir Putin. After that, he advocated the resumption of Nord Stream 2, announced Putin's desire to sit down at the negotiating table with Ukraine, and also called the decision of his colleague Angela Merkel in 2008 to prevent our country from joining NATO correct. The former head of the board of directors of Rosneft stated this in an interview with Stern magazine and the RTL/ntv television channel.

Peace talks between Ukraine and Russia

Gerhard Schroeder said the good news is that the Kremlin is in favor of ending the war through peace talks. According to him, the first success is that a deal was signed in Istanbul to export grain from Ukrainian ports. Schroeder believes that it can be gradually expanded until a ceasefire.

In addition, the politician called the invasion of Ukraine “a mistake of the Russian government.”

The ex-Chancellor of Germany also called the idea of returning Crimea to Ukraine by military means absurd. He noted that the region is allegedly Russian, with the exception of the Crimean Tatars. Schroeder also expressed doubt that Putin will be able to abandon the peninsula, and it will take time to return it.

“Perhaps not 99 years like in Hong Kong, but in the next generation,” he said.

Gerhard Schroeder also said that the return of Donbass to Ukraine looks more complicated. He believes that it will be necessary to find a solution based on the example of the Swiss cantons (Each canton has its own constitution and laws – ed.).

The former German leader added that the main question is whether there is a desire to end the war. In his opinion, both countries should make concessions. Schroeder also welcomed the fact that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan decided to become a mediator in Russian-Ukrainian issues, but “it does not work without Washington's approval.”

Ukraine's entry into NATO

The former chancellor said Angela Merkel and Frank Walter Steinmeier's decision to block Ukraine's entry into NATO in 2008 was a wise decision. According to him, military neutrality without membership in the Alliance, like Austria, can become an alternative for Ukraine.

Nord Stream-2

The former head of the board of directors of Rosneft believes that the commissioning of Nord Stream 2, frozen due to the Russian invasion, could solve the acute problem of fuel shortages.

“It is already completed. If things go really bad, there is this pipeline, with both branches working gas pipeline, we will have no problems with supplies for German industry and German households,” said Schroeder.

He added that such a decision by Berlin would reduce the financial burden on German citizens.

Later, his wife So Yong Schroeder-Kim said that the German politician came to Russia for negotiations. The ex-Chancellor of Germany intends to discuss energy issues in the Russian capital.

On May 20, Schroeder left Rosneft because of the threat that the EU would put him on the sanctions list. He stayed in this position for five years.
