In ancient caves in Hawaii, scientists have discovered mysterious life forms

Researchers have discovered a wide variety of new bacteria in lava caves on the volcanic island of Hawaii.

In lava caves on the island of Hawaii, which is one of the main constituents of the Hawaiian Islands, scientists have discovered populations of new microbes. Given the fact that science is still unknown about 99% of the species of bacteria on Earth, they are sometimes called “dark matter” by analogy with the mysterious substance that makes up most of our universe, according to ScienceAlert.

Earth microbes are the smallest known living organisms on the planet and can be found almost anywhere, even in the most inhospitable conditions. Such places are the lava caves on the volcanic island of Hawaii.

In the ancient Less than 400 years old and between 500 and 800 years old, scientists have discovered mysterious life forms in caves in Hawaii

These subterranean geological structures are virtually devoid of sunlight and are composed of toxic minerals and gases. But a wide variety of bacteria unknown to science lives here.

Scientists expected that in the harshest conditions for life, in geothermal vents, there would be less diverse microbial life than in other parts of the lava caves. And it really turned out to be true. But what surprised scientists was that in these harsher, less than 400-year-old sites, interactions within microbial communities were more complex than in sites 500 to 800 years old, with higher diversity.

Scientists believe that another 99% of all types of bacteria on Earth remain unknown to science. Therefore, sometimes these microbial communities are called “dark matter”. Microbes make up a huge part of the biomass of our planet and almost all of the biomass in the bowels of the Earth. In recent years, it is underground microbes that have attracted more and more interest, because they exist in conditions that are very similar to those on Mars.

In a new study, US scientists have discovered many more unique life forms than expected. After analyzing one of the RNA genes of local microbes, scientists could not find a complete match with the genes of known microbes.

“When microbes colonize volcanic rocks, they need time and their community structure changes. The more extreme habitat “the more interaction we see between microbes and that they need to survive. At the same time, in younger lava caves, we found that microbes have less species similarities between themselves. This is most likely due to competition between species,” says Rebecca Prescott of the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

As Focus already wrote, scientists have discovered the world's largest bacterium. Its length is about 1 cm and it is tens of times larger than all known similar giant bacteria.
