Scientists have discovered effective substances against the penetration of viruses
Some inhibitors are capable of blocking the entry of viruses into cells, including SARS-CoV-2.
Specialists at the University of Geneva in Switzerland have discovered substances that can block the entry of viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 into cells. The scientists' research was published in the journal Chemical Science.
It is known that many viruses to penetrate into cells use the mechanism of cellular absorption mediated by thiols – analogs of alcohols, where the oxygen atom is replaced by a sulfur atom.
The study authors analyzed potential substances that could prove to be absorption inhibitors in the case of the coronavirus.
For this, tests were performed on the cellular uptake of sulfur molecules labeled with fluorescent probes to assess their presence inside the cells.
As it turned out in the course of the work, some inhibitors are 5000 times more effective than Ellman's reagent, which was previously used to detect thiol groups.
