The human body needs not two liters of water per day, as previously thought, but 1.3-1.8 liters. The decrease in the amount of water that you need to drink during the day is due to the fact that about half of the water a person consumes with food, writes the Daily Mail.
Previous research in this area has relied on surveys conducted on small samples of people, but now more than 90 scientists from around the world have come together to measure real water demand using a different method. They interviewed 5604 people under the age of 96 from 23 different countries.
Participants drank a measured amount of water enriched with deuterium, which is naturally present in the human body and is completely harmless. The researchers then measured the rate at which deuterium disappeared from the body.
The analysis showed that people living in hot and humid conditions and at high altitudes, as well as athletes, pregnant and lactating women, require more water, because they turnover is higher.
According to one of the scientists involved in the study, Professor John Speakman from the University of Aberdeen, the circulation of water in the body does not equal the need for drinking water.
“Even if a man in his 20s averages 4.2 liters of water per day, he does not need to drink 4.2 liters of water every day. About 15% of this value reflects surface water exchange and water formed as a result of metabolism. Actual water consumption is about 3.6 liters per day Since most foods also contain water, a significant amount of water is provided only by food.This study shows that the common belief that we should all drink eight glasses of water is probably too high for most people,” he said.
The professor clarified that, according to calculations, a typical middle-aged man may need from 1.6 to 1.8 liters per day, and a typical woman of the same age – from 1 .3 to 1.4 liters.
“For people aged 80, this can be up to about 1.1 liters per day. But this largely depends on what kind of food they eat. For example, if they eat a lot of soup, they need to drink less””, – by Speakman explained.
The scientist added that beverages such as tea, coffee, sodas and fruit juices also count towards the daily allowance, but they also contain other foods that can be unhealthy.
