A new study by scientists has shown that the most attractive female lips correspond to the existing “gold standard” of beauty.
A group of American scientists led by Sebastian Kotofan from the Mayo Clinic, one of the largest medical centers in the world, conducted a study to find out which female lips men consider the most attractive. It turned out that the proportions that are already considered the “gold standard” for the beauty of female lips were recognized as the most beautiful lips, according to EurekAlert.
While social networks and many celebrities encourage women to have more voluminous lips, a new study showed that, on the contrary, more natural and harmonious female lips look the most attractive.
Experiment with lips
In order to find out which female lips are considered the most attractive, scientists invited several dozen men and women, who were from 30 to 40 years old, to participate in the experiment. On a computer monitor, they were shown images of women's faces, on which the lips had different ratios to each other (top to bottom), as well as different volumes. Among these photographs were images of female lips that were not modified with the help of photo editors. To understand the attractiveness of women's lips, scientists used eye tracking technology to assess which parts of the face respondents looked at the most.

The scientists created a series of lip images with ratios of the upper lip to the lower lip in the following proportions: 1 to 1, 1 to 1.6, 1 to 2 and 1.6 to 1. The scientists also changed the volume of the lips using digital imaging. Some images had natural volume, while others were either reduced to 70% and 85% of their actual size, or increased to 115% and 130%.
Which female lips are the most attractive?
The results of the study showed that the respondents considered the most attractive female lips lips with a ratio of the upper lip to the lower lip in the proportion of 1 to 1.6. It is this proportion that is considered in cosmetology to be the “gold standard” of lip beauty. And the most unattractive proportion of the lips turned out to be the ratio of the upper lip to the lower one with an indicator of 1 to 2.
As for the volume of the lips, according to the results of the experiment, the most attractive lips turned out to be lips with a natural, not increased volume. For example, the most unattractive lips turned out to be lips with a volume that was increased to 130%.
According to Kotofan, their study only confirmed the results of the few previous scientific studies that dealt with the beauty of a woman's face, and lips in particular.< /p>
Longer does not mean better
“It is important to note that when viewing images, the respondents spent the least time looking at lips with proportions of 1 to 1.6 and the usual, not increased, and not reduced volume. On the contrary, the participants in the experiment “We considered the modified lips longer. We believe that this is due to the fact that the respondents have their own internal standard of beauty and it corresponds to the most attractive lips. Lips deviating from the internal standard naturally caused more attention so that the brain could process the information received,” says Kotofana .
Thus, the results of a new study show that people may spend longer looking at seemingly more attractive photos, not because they like them. Maybe they are just trying to comprehend what they saw, scientists say.
As Focus already wrote, scientists have proven that pictures taken with front cameras, that is, the process of creating a selfie, distort a person’s face and this threatens the appearance of psychological problems.
