Fast internet and a good smartphone contract became more and more important in the pandemic
In the lockdown, the importance of fast internet increased rapidly: smartphone contracts and particularly fast fixed-line internet connections are the winners in the corona pandemic.
Between April and June, 68,000 additional smartphone contracts were concluded in Austria, according to the monitor published by the RTR supervisory authority on Tuesday. There are also 28,000 new contracts with mobile data tariffs. In contrast, the number of broadband fixed network connections rose by only 13,000.
Corona pandemic: retrofitting landline connections
However, the Austrians upgraded their existing landline connections. Every sixth fixed-line broadband connection (414,000) now has over 100 Mbit data downloads, in the second quarter alone there was an increase of 16 percent compared to the previous quarter. Slow connections with less than 10 Mbit, on the other hand, only make up a strong fifth of landline connections.
At the end of June there were around 12.3 million broadband connections in Austria, 2.55 million of which were in the fixed network. Another 2.52 million connections comprised mobile data (excluding voice telephony), while 7.2 million included smartphone tariffs.
