Sex Offenders: Ottawa Plans to Share More Information with Washington

Ottawa explains its gesture by the fact that “sex crimes know no borders”.

The federal government has entered into discussions with the United States with a view to “better” sharing of information about sex offenders who prey on children.

According to information from the office of the Minister of Public Security, Marco Mendicino, these steps are part of the National Strategy for the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation on the Internet.

Possible legislative changes arising from negotiations with the U.S. government could result in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) services notifying their counterparts in the United States about travel child sex offenders.

Also according to Mr. Cohen, the Trudeau government wants to take into account the complexity of the issue, therefore exploring legislative options that would facilitate the disclosure of information, if necessary, while balancing rights guaranteed by the Charter of Rights. and freedoms.

Both the United States and Canada each have their own sex offender registry; these must inform the relevant authorities if they intend to leave the country and specify their departure and return dates.

Current law, however, prevents the RCMP from sharing information on sex offenders with other countries, unless the federal police believe that a crime is about to be committed.

In fact, the Privacy Act prohibits the routine disclosure of such information .

Alex Cohen, spokesperson for Minister Mendicino, clarified that due to the many complexities, it is too early to give a specific timeline for this work, or how which he will eventually be framed.
