Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu went to Istanbul to sign agreements on the export of grain from Ukraine. This was announced by the press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov in a comment to the RIA-Novosti agency.

“We can confirm that Shoigu went to Turkey. We can confirm that the signing of the agreement is being prepared today. But let's wait. Let's not get ahead of ourselves yet,” Peskov said.

The Turkish presidential administration announced the signing of an agreement on the export of grain in Istanbul on July 22 at 16.30 in the Dolmabahce Palace. The ceremony will be attended by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and UN Secretary General António Guterres.

“Against the backdrop of the food crisis that is looming, it is very important to unblock the supply of fertilizers, food and grain to the world markets. Some decisive this will not help – a relatively small amount of Ukrainian grain. But still, it is very important that this grain gets to world markets,” Peskov added.

Grain agreement in Istanbul – terms of the agreement

The first stage involves the unblocking of about 80 ships with food in Ukrainian ports. One of the most important components of the agreement is security guarantees for dry cargo ships so that they can freely leave the ports of Ukraine.

The agreement on the export of Ukrainian grain across the Black Sea does not provide for military escort of cargo ships, the parties undertake not to attack them, says a source familiar with the discussions.

The agreement on the export of grain from Ukraine involves the creation of safe corridors from Odessa, Chornomorsk and Yuzhny, the source added.

Grain agreement signing ceremony

Note that Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed on July 19 in Tehran the possibility of exporting grain from Ukraine. In Istanbul on July 13, the parties negotiated for 3 hours and agreed to create a coordination center in Turkey to resolve the “grain issue”.
