Police are looking for one or more suspects.

Six people were hit by bullets early this morning in a drive-by shooting in Ajax, Durham Police say.

The shooting happened in the back of an establishment in a shopping center on Harwood Avenue around 1:20 a.m. When police responded, they located five of the victims, while that a sixth was later located in a hospital.

One ​​of the victims underwent surgery for life-threatening injuries and remains in a Critical condition, according to Detective Kristy Mackinnon, who spoke to media at the scene.

The other five victims had non-life-threatening injuries, she added.

Durham Regional Police Detective Kristy Mackinnon is in charge of the investigation.

Detective Mackinnon says a big barbecue is underway during the shooting and many people were in attendance.

The shooter(s) left the scene in a dark-colored four-door vehicle, she said. No further details were known at the time of the press conference.

Police are now working to obtain video recordings and want to speak to witnesses.

Forensic investigators are at the scene collecting evidence.
