Sony raises the prices of its PlayStation 5 consoles

Inflation is to blame.

Sony's PlayStation 5 goes up $20 in Canada.

The Japanese group Sony announced Thursday an increase in the selling price of its PlayStation 5 (PS5) consoles in most of its markets, including Canada, with the exception United States, citing high inflation.

PS5 prices in Canada jump from $630 to $650 for the version with disc drive, and from $500 to $520 for the digital version.

When we compare , we console ourselves: in Europe, the increase is greater, at 50 (about C$65) for both versions of the console.

These new prices are effective now in the UK, China, Australia, Mexico and Canada, while they will only be applied in Japan from September 15.

We are seeing high levels of inflation, as well as negative currency effects, affecting consumers and putting many industrial sectors under pressure, justified in a press release Jim Ryan, the boss of Sony Interactive Entertainment.

In light of these tough economic conditions, we have made the tough decision to increase the recommended retail prices for the PS5, Ryan added, saying it was a necessity.

The reason why Sony spared the United States was not specified, even though inflation there is very high.

The American giant Microsoft has not announced, for the moment, a price increase for its Xbox consoles, the competitors of the PS5.

As for Nintendo, the other Japanese video game behemoth, its president, Shuntaro Furukawa, declared ten days ago to the newspaper Nikkei that his group did not plan to time to raise the prices of its Switch console, despite increased production and distribution costs. We want to avoid excluding consumers, he said.

This announcement comes in a context where it is still very difficult to obtain PS5 consoles , due, among other things, to disruptions in supply chains linked to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Twitter, several Internet users showed their dissatisfaction.

Jim Ryan reiterated that Sony's priority remains improving the production of its PS5 consoles.
