A murdered wife and son without clues. A renowned lawyer who hires a former client to kill him and a large life insurance for the sole survivor of this story of tragedies and altercations with criminal overtones.
These are some of the ingredients of what happened in recent weeks with Alex Murdaugh, a prestigious South Carolina lawyer.
Murdaugh, 53, is the descendant of a well-connected legal family from South Carolina.
Over 3 generations, your great-grandfather, grandfather and father were the main prosecutors from a five-county region of the state.
His story has come to light after survived a head shot and was admitted to the hospital with “superficial wounds,” the police revealed.
Apparently, the lawyer asked his 61-year-old former client Curtis Edward Smith to give him kill so that his only living son could collect The policy $ 10 million worth of life insurance.
Smith admitted his involvement and now faces a series of criminal charges, which include conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, assault and battery, assisted suicide, and drug possession.
Originally, Murdaugh’s attorneys had claimed that he was changing a tire when an unidentified assailant shot him.
But the family’s attorney admitted Wednesday that Alex Murdaugh devised the plan with the mistaken belief that his eldest son, Buster, would not be able to collect the insurance money if he took his own life. That’s why he planned it to be murder.
“It was an attempt, on his part, to do something to protect his son [mayor]”Attorney Dick Harpootlian told NBC. He devised the plan after not being able to disengage from oxycodone and suffering from a “deep depression” after the death of his wife and son in June and his father dying of cancer the same week, he said on television.
Harpootlian added that Alex Murdaugh is now cooperating with authorities.
The wife and the youngest son
In June, Alex Murdaugh’s wife Margaret, 52, and their youngest son Paul, 22, were killed near their home.
At the time of his death, Paul Murdaugh was facing criminal charges stemming from a 2019 incident, when he caused a boating accident while drunk, killing a woman.
Police have not brought charges against anyone for the murder of Paul y Margaret Murdaugh and he has not suggested that Alex Murdaugh is involved.
Speaking to the NBC morning show Wednesday, attorney Harpootlian denied that Murdaugh had anything to do with it with their deaths.
“He’s totally distraught,” Harpootlian said. “He didn’t kill them.”
The police have no comment on possible suspects of the deaths of Paul and Margaret in June.
After the murders, Alex Murdaugh’s brothers, Randy and John, said they did not know if the family had enemies, although they claimed that Paul had received threats.
Harpootlian said that Alex Murdaugh he doesn’t know who killed his family and added that it is investigating “an individual, or individuals, who could be involved.”
Two months after the murder of his relatives, in early September Murdaugh was forced to resign from his position at his family’s law firm after it was discovered that misappropriated funds for millions of dollars.
His lawyer says he used them primarily to finance an opioid addiction. Murdaugh entered rehab several days later.
According to the defenders’ account, it was after all this that Alex Murdaugh planned his failed assassination.
2 more deaths
But that is not all. The Alex Murdaugh case also led the police to open two more investigations: into the death of his housekeeper in 2018 and the death, in 2015, of Stephen Smith, a 19-year-old boy found dead in the same county, in less than 10 miles away.
In the case of the young man, it was believed that his death was a shooting, but it was later ruled that it was a probable hit and run. Police have not said what information was recovered during the Murdaugh investigation that led them to investigate the Smith case.
About the housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield, 57, it was reported that her death was attributed to an accidental fall, but that the fact was never reported to the coroner’s office and an autopsy was not conducted. Death was recorded as natural.
All of this makes Alex Murdaugh’s case far from closed.
