The entire huge volcanic region of the Red Planet is dotted with these strange structures. But now they have been found elsewhere.

A huge volcanic region on Mars called the Tharsis province is filled with unusual craters that were not created by meteorite impacts. New images from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter show that these craters are also found elsewhere on Mars, Universe Today reports.

Unusual depressions on the surface, which are called pit craters, can be found not only on Mars, but also on the Moon, Venus and even Earth. These craters were not created by falling space rocks to the surface. They are formed as a result of the collapse of rock over the void, which was formed as a result of the passage of lava flows. Scientists can distinguish such depressions on Mars from ordinary impact craters because they do not have raised edges and there are no signs of ejection of rock after the impact.

In a vast volcanic region on Mars called the Tharsis Province, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter discovered more than a hundred pit craters that are different from the rest of the same non-impact depressions.

These unusual depressions are called atypical pit craters, and they are sharper-edged and cylindrical or bell-shaped. These craters are typically three times larger than regular pit craters, ranging from 50 to 350 meters in diameter.

The province of Tharsis is located near the equator in the western hemisphere of Mars. Here are the largest volcanoes in the solar system and scientists believe that this is why there are so many pit craters that appeared due to volcanic activity.

But now the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has detected a large number of atypical pit craters in the Elysian region. It is also a volcanic region on Mars, but is older than Tharsis Province and is in the eastern hemisphere of Mars. Here is one of the highest mountains in the solar system – the volcano Elysius with a height of 16 km. It was near this volcano that the spacecraft discovered many strange craters.

Scientists believe that the new data will help to better understand the geological history of Mars. Although there are many impact craters near the Elysian volcano, atypical pit craters stand out among them due to their different appearance, and they are sometimes arranged in linear patterns.

Scientists have also discovered similar Martian depressions on the Moon, as Focus already wrote. Scientists have even proposed using such craters as sites for equipping the first colonies on the Earth's satellite.

Focus already wrote that August 5, 2022 marks exactly 10 years since the Curiosity rover arrived on Mars. During this time, the NASA spacecraft managed to make many important discoveries, but there are 5 most important ones, according to scientists.
