As the number of subscribers to its residential offer continues to increase, and it gradually deploys its Direct-to-cell offer to cover dead zones with a mobile network, Starlink also continues to deploy its terminals on airplanes. Indeed, Elon Musk's company also offers a subscription for airplanes. And given the speeds offered by it, the offer is very attractive for airlines.

In addition, this week, Starlink announced the crossing of a symbolic threshold. According to a publication on the social network X, Starlink is now active on more than 500 planes worldwide. And this is only the beginning, since in September, the company had indicated that it has contracts to equip nearly 2,500 planes. Among the airlines that have signed with Starlink, there is United Airlines, but also Air France.

40 to 220 Mbps download

On its website, Starlink states that its aircraft terminals have already completed more than 55,000 flights, corresponding to more than 110,000 flight hours. Each terminal offers a connection with a download speed ranging from 40 Mbps to 220 Mbps, an upload speed of 8 to 12 Mbps, and a latency of less than 99 ms.

Starlink's advantage over its competitors is that its satellites are in low Earth orbit, which allows for low latency, in addition to being very numerous. As of September, Starlink controlled two-thirds of the active satellites and it had surpassed 7,000 satellites launched. However, the goal of 42,000 satellites is still far away.

We also recently shared estimates that Starlink would have generated over $7 billion by 2024.

  • Starlink also offers terminals for airplanes
  • And this one has just crossed the 500 connected aircraft mark
  • But this is only the beginning, since this one must connect a total of 2,500 aircraft
  • Thanks to its satellites in low Earth orbit, and in very large numbers, Starlink eclipses the competition
  • Recently, estimates have indicated that Starlink would have generated more than 7 billion dollars in 2024
