Stranded in space: Two astronauts stuck on ISS to return to Earth “soon”, Donald Trump announces

SpaceX, Elon Musk's company, will begin a mission to repatriate two space veterans, stuck since last June in the International Space Station, announced American President Donald Trump on Tuesday evening.

Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams arrived at the ISS in June aboard Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft. They were supposed to stay in the orbiting laboratory for eight days, but technical problems with the spacecraft prompted NASA to change its plans. Donald Trump announced on Tuesday, January 28, that SpaceX will pick up the two astronauts, after more than 300 days.

The American space agency first announced in August that Boeing’s rival SpaceX would bring the duo back to Earth in February. But the mission has been postponed again, until the end of March, as SpaceX prepares a new spacecraft.

“Good luck Elon!!!”

“Elon will be on his way soon. Hopefully everyone will be safe. Good luck Elon!!!” Donald Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, without specifying when the mission would take place.

The boss of Space X, which largely financed the American president's campaign, had previously said that the tenant of the White House had asked SpaceX to bring back the two astronauts “as soon as possible”. SpaceX carries out missions every six months to allow the rotation of the ISS crews.

The two astronauts in good health

Asked about their physical condition and morale in January, the two astronauts assured that they were adapting well to their extended stopover and were busy with various scientific missions. Suni, whose full name is Sunita Lyn Williams, is 59 and told CBS News that she was “trying to remember how to walk.” A former Navy veteran, she ran the Boston Marathon from space in 2007 by running on a treadmill at the same time as competitors on Earth in Massachusetts.

Butch Williams, 62, is a father of two daughters and has been an astronaut since 2000. The astronauts' stay has yet to surpass Frank Rubio's record of 371 days on the ISS in 2023 due to a coolant leak on board.
