    Scientists have tested a new telescope device at an observatory in Chile, and it has shown the unique composition of a star.

    Astronomers from the Gemini South Observatory, which is located at an altitude of 2700 meters in the Andes, in Chile, conducted the first test of the GHOST high-resolution optical spectrograph. This device was created specifically for the local telescope and now scientists will be able to see the optical spectra of starlight in the highest resolution, reports ScienceAlert.

    The first image of a star called HD 222925, which is located at a distance of about 1460 light years, showed the effectiveness of the new device in terms of studying the spectra of starlight.

    This star was not chosen by chance. After all, as Focus already wrote, before that, its image was obtained using the Hubble Space Telescope, and scientists found out that this star is truly unique.

    Spectral analysis of the star showed that it contains as many as 65 chemical elements, 42 of which are heavy elements. Astronomers have never seen such a number of elements and it can only appear as a result of a collision of neutron stars or a supernova explosion.

    According to scientists, the star HD 222925 is in the final stages of its cosmic life. It was most likely created from a cloud of dust and gas that was already filled with so many elements that came from the death of other stars.

    This information was only confirmed by a new spectral image of the GHOST instrument. But scientists believe that this test image may not reveal all the secrets that may still lurk in this star. Most importantly, according to scientists, this high-resolution image of the star, which shows its spectrum, confirms the performance of the device, which will soon be put into operation.

    The GHOST instrument, which took 10 years to build, is 10 times more powerful than the current Gemini South telescope's spectrograph and is the most powerful of its kind in any other telescope on Earth.

    The light that stars emit hides a lot of details about the star itself. With the help of spectral analysis, you can find out not only what the star consists of, but also what processes take place inside it. The entire spectrum of a star also shows how old the star is and where it formed.
