Users in social networks express fears about the fate of the potato and sunflower crops. Some see this as an omen of impending disaster and remember the invaders who died in the war in Ukraine.

Residents of the Ulyanovsk region of the Russian Federation declare an invasion of butterflies. It is alleged that this has never happened before, and the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation has already admitted that insects have destroyed several thousand hectares of trees. This was reported on the page of the public “state of emergency Ulyanovsk” in VK.

The Naskoms clutter the streets, sit on cars and buildings. There are suggestions that the reason for the appearance of the gypsy moth is in abnormal heat. There are many posts on local social networks with photos and videos of these butterflies.

Information from Russian officials

Sergey Belyaev, head of the environmental department of the Ulyanovsk region, confirms this. According to him, this is the first outbreak of gypsy moth in the Russian Federation over the past 10 years, and as of July 18, the affected area was already about 2 thousand hectares.

“Specialists from forestries and the Ulyanovsk branch of the Center for Forest Protection are conducting a survey of the area covered by the silkworm,” he said about measures to combat the scourge.

The gypsy moth is considered one of the most common forest pests. Usually caterpillars damage deciduous trees. After the active feeding phase ends, the insect enters the pupal phase.

Local specialists set up pheromone traps and keep records of the adult.

According to the director of the Ulyanovsk branch of the Federal State Institution “Roslesozashchita” Ruslan Zhamaletdinov, in the fall, the pest will be counted by egg-laying and a development forecast for the next year will be made.

The region's Minister of Nature and Circular Economy, Gulnara Rakhmatulina, has already ordered the development of a pest control plan. Next year, work is already planned to eliminate silkworm breeding centers, they will be subjected to ground processing.
