The Sévéragais, who will soon be twenty-four years old, is destined for a career as a special needs educator. But before that, he intends to travel, he who likes contact and is curious to discover the world.

Ocean of wisdom. This is one of the translations of Tenzin Sahuquet's first name. “It's the first name of the Dalai Lama,” smiles the young man who will be twenty-four in a few days. My mother, who traveled to India in the mid-80s, converted to Buddhism. She passed on to us a taste for discovering the world.”

And indeed, the Sévéragais has kept in him this curiosity and this open-mindedness which makes men more tolerant and more… wise.

Born on January 21, 2001 in Rodez, he grew up in Lavernhe-de-Sévérac and went to school and college in Sévérac before joining the Monteil de Rodez high school, in the sports studies football section.

He was already passionate about baking. “I had a deal with my parents. I had to get my baccalaureate first and then I could do whatever I wanted.”

Bac ES which he obtained in 2019 before preparing a CAP pastry in Laissac. “But I finally stopped after four or five months. And I enrolled in Albi in the sociology faculty. That left me a lot of time, he admits. So I got very involved in the community.”

“Relational skills”

In Lavernhe, he created, with friends, a guinguette that would operate for two summers. He set up a university football team within the Albi faculty as well as a student association in order to organize evenings and cultural events. “At the same time, I was a football instructor for the 15th anniversary of the Sévérac-Laissac-Saint-Geniez-d'Olt agreement,” he adds. It was a period of discovery, I needed it.”

Tireless and hyperactive, he did not neglect his studies, as he obtained his degree before moving on to a specialist educator course. “My friends told me that I had interpersonal skills,” emphasizes Tenzin Sahuquet, who applied to Toulouse and Marvejols, the city where he finally joined the Social Work Training Organization (OFTS). “I would have preferred to be a student in Toulouse,” he smiles, “but in Lozère I found a rich community life, sports and nature… And then I was only an hour away from my family.”

Then begins a three-year course that ends in a few months, leading to a degree and a state diploma in specialized education, marked by several internships – Saint-Geniez-d’Olt, Mende… – which allowed the young man to discover and confront the different audiences with whom he will be working.

Disabled people in a residential home, isolated foreign minors, young people placed in educational centers… “During the summer, I also worked in Saint-Geniez in a medical reception center that welcomes people with autism spectrum disorders. It was a really powerful internship.”

Want to travel

He even flew off for an internship in the Canaries, off the coast of Spain, as part of an Erasmus, with his girlfriend Valentine. “We lived on his great-uncle's sailboat,” rejoices the Aveyronnais. “We took the opportunity to sail a little, to go diving and hiking.”

On his return in November 2023, he had to find a new internship. “It wasn't easy because it's a sector in difficulty, with social prevention policies seeing funding decrease year after year.”

Tenzin Sahuquet finally joined a structure in Aurillac, in Cantal. “I wanted to work in a specialized prevention service to support people in priority neighborhoods of the city, but in the end, I work in a service that supports families confronted with incest and sexual assault.”

An internship that will conclude his training, with the presentation of a thesis, next June, in Montpellier, since the OFTS of Marvejols depends on the Paul-Valéry University.

“But before starting work, I would like to travel, says the young man who made a trip by bike, from Lavernhe to Brest, to go see his brother Manuel.” And if not by bike, it will perhaps be on board the truck that he is currently fitting out. And as every time he travels, he will be keen to praise the landscapes and gastronomy of his beautiful department of Aveyron. “I talk about it a lot around me. I am very attached to the culture in which I grew up,” he confirms.
