The new third generation Nissan Qashqai has changed dramatically. Focus found out if the changes have benefited the popular crossover and how it is better than its predecessor.
Expensive leather and wood in the finish, a comfortable driver's seat with an electric drive and massage, a projection on the windshield … Do you think we are talking about an expensive premium model? No, this is the new Nissan Qashqai 2022.
Compact urban crossovers are perhaps the most popular automotive segment in the world. The competition is very tough and the choice of models is huge, so even the founder of this Qashqai class is not guaranteed success if you do not keep up with the times. To remain competitive, you have to change radically, and the third-generation Nissan Qashqai has really changed. The change starts with design – the new Nissan Qashqai has become much more expressive in appearance and attracts more attention from others. Smooth lines have been replaced by stricter edges. A large roof spoiler and a curved window line add a dash to the car's silhouette.
Although the front of the car looks good. Nissan's signature V-shaped grille is now paired with slender swept-back headlights for a sleek, modern look in the dark. Diode optics in all versions, and in the test version of Tekna + – also matrix (with a variable beam of light). The road is well lit and, in addition, the electronics automatically switch from high beam to low beam so as not to dazzle oncoming drivers.
In addition, the top Nissan Qashqai Tekna + is recognizable by its 19-inch wheels and two-tone paint. Such options were not available to the predecessor and they undoubtedly add a visual gloss to the model. However, it should be noted that the initial versions of the crossover are more restrained in appearance.
The Nissan crossover is built on the new CMF-CD platform and has more light aluminum in its design – fenders, hood, doors are made of it. Therefore, the car weighs at the level of its predecessor, although it has become a little larger.
Dimensions Nissan Qashqai 2022
- Length – 4425 mm
- Width – 1835 mm< /li>
- Height – 1625mm
- Wheelbase – 2665mm
- Clearance – 170mm
The steering wheel has become a little larger, but the gearshift lever, on the contrary, has been made much more compact and fits comfortably in the hand. The front panel is V-shaped and seems to echo the radiator grille.
For the first time, Nissan Qashqai received a virtual dashboard with resizable graphics and customizable configuration. We liked the classic look with round dials more, although this is already a matter of taste. The readings are easy to read, and the data is also projected onto the windshield – this allows you to keep your eyes on the road and get the most important information.
The touchscreen 9.0-inch display of the multimedia system is located high – at eye level. Its menu is simple and clear, so it was possible to deal with it very quickly. You find the functions you need intuitively. Naturally, Apple CarPlay (wireless) and Android Auto (wired) functions are provided. You have to use them all the time, because Qashqai's regular navigation is not the best and it's much easier to connect a smartphone with Waze or Google Maps.
There are few audio and climate switches, but some buttons are too small and difficult to use by touch – you have to be distracted from the road. Fortunately, some of the keys are duplicated on the steering wheel. At the bottom of the center console appeared wireless charging for smartphones. But the USB connectors were not brought here: they are hidden in the compartment under the front armrest, which is not very convenient.
The driving position is not very high. The range of adjustment of the steering column and the seat is quite enough, so we managed to find a comfortable position quickly. In the Nissan Qashqai Tekna +, the front seats are electrically adjustable and heated. In addition, the steering wheel is heated, and the driver now has a settings memory.
The seats are quite elastic, and their backs, although not deep, provide good lateral support. They are comfortable and after a long trip to Qashqai you do not feel tired, especially since now there is also a massage function. Unless the armrest lacks horizontal adjustment and there is nowhere to rest with your right hand. The visibility of the car does not raise any questions – you get used to the dimensions very quickly and parking on Qashai is easy even without a camera.
Let's move to the second row. Back access is facilitated by the fact that the doors open almost at a right angle. The increased dimensions of the car had a positive effect on the interior space, which is especially noticeable just in the “gallery”. There is more legroom and headroom, and the interior is wider and now three adults in the back will not be cramped. With my height of 176 cm, it is quite spacious here, but for passengers with a height of 185 cm and above, the head already rests on the ceiling.
In addition, separate ventilation deflectors and USB ports appeared here. It should also be noted that the child seat is easy to install – Isofix mounts are conveniently located and easily accessible, so it was possible to install it in just a minute.
Trunk volume has grown to 504 liters in the normal state and 1422 liters with the rear seats folded down. The floor here is made two-level, and under it a spare wheel and a subwoofer are hidden. The tailgate received an electric drive with an opening sensor (it works if you move your foot under the rear bumper). What's missing here are hooks and a net to secure luggage.
2022 Nissan Qashqai equipment
The equipment of the Nissan Qashqai has become much richer – now all versions have 7 airbags, automatic deceleration, lane keeping, blind spot and driver fatigue control, traffic sign recognition. In short, safety is paramount. Electronic “assistants” are not intrusive and in general their work is not satisfactory. Qashqai recognizes the markings on our roads and signs.
The Tekna + package also includes keyless entry, a panoramic roof, power accessories, dual-zone climate control, high-quality Bose acoustics, light and rain sensors, all-round cameras, front and rear parking sensors, and adaptive cruise control.
Quick and economical — the new Nissan Qashqai engine
The new Nissan Qashqai in Ukraine is currently offered only with a 1.3-liter petrol turbo engine developed jointly by Renault-Nissan and Mercedes-Benz. It is not much more powerful than the 2.0-liter four of its predecessor – it develops 150 hp. With. But on the other hand, this engine is much more powerful: a peak of 250 Nm of torque is available from just 1600 rpm.
In fact, this means a noticeable pickup from low revs. The motor is brisk and responsive to pressing the gas pedal. There is more than enough of it in the city, and overtaking on the highway is done easily and naturally. Up to a hundred, the Nissan crossover starts in 9.9 seconds and confident acceleration continues to about 150 km/h. The maximum speed has increased to 198 km/h.
In general, thanks to the turbo four, the car has become much faster, but at the same time it is quite quiet and makes itself known only if it is strongly untwisted. The engine is relatively economical – according to the passport, it consumes 8.0 l/100 km in the city and 6.5 l/100 km on the highway. The eco-mode and engine stop system help to save fuel. During the test, the average consumption was 8.6-8.8 l/100 km with predominantly city driving.
The stepless variator has been reconfigured and works better – it reacts faster and correctly selects the desired engine speed. On the track, it was possible to maintain a speed of 110 km/h at less than 2000 rpm.
How the handling of the Nissan Qashqai has changed
Four-wheel drive cannot be forced, as in the previous Nissan Qashqai, but there are special modes for winter and off-road. Of course, one should not expect outstanding cross-country ability from a crossover (especially since the clearance is not the largest – 170 mm), but for a forest dirt road or a snowy road, Qashqai's abilities are more than enough.
The crossover has become better in handling – its steering is more accurate and sharper and the car easily maneuvers in the city. But the information content of the steering is not enough, especially in the near-zero zone. The suspension was made a little stiffer (especially noticeable with 19-inch wheels), which helped to reduce body roll in corners. However, the ride remains quite comfortable and most of the bumps are easily absorbed – only serious potholes are noticeable. Grip with the road does not raise questions, and the crossover slows down confidently. It should also be noted that the new Qashqai has become quieter inside, although the bottom would still need a little more sound insulation.
Nissan Qashqai 2022 price
You can buy Nissan Qashqai in Ukraine at a price of 859,970 hryvnia, and the top version of Tekna + costs from 1,390,870 hryvnia. Compared to the previous generation model, the crossover has significantly risen in price, which, first of all, is dictated by the extended package.
The new Nissan Qashqai of the third generation is more spacious, has a powerful and economical turbo engine, as well as a whole range of new technologies and options that are not available to many models in this class. It has become more modern, but retains the traditional qualities of an urban crossover – practicality, maneuverability, comfort. At the same time, the new generation of the model can no longer be called an “economy proposition” in its segment, because the price of Nissan Qashqai has risen to the level of main rivals like Kia Sportage or Hyundai Tucson.
