"The Alès collection is working very well": the EFS is not worried about the Basin

This Monday, January 27, the French Blood Establishment (EFS) organized its first collection of the year at the Jules-Cazot space. A collection that promises to be “successful” according to the organization.

After the paperwork is in order, comes the traditional question: “Left arm or right arm ?” The donor has the choice of knowing which sauce he will be eaten with, or rather, which arm he will be injected into. This Monday, January 27, at the Jules-Cazot space, the French Blood Establishment (EFS) invited the people of Alès to its monthly blood donation drive. According to Lucie Dumoulin, in charge of promoting donations at the EFS, the capital of the Cévennes remains “a generous land“, with 71 donors for the January 27 collection.

“We lose donors when they enter the workforce”

Lucie Dumoulin details the measures taken by the organization to encourage residents to donate. “For traditional collections, like here in Alès, we work a lot with municipalities and urban areas.” The person in charge of promoting donations explains that the majority age group is “between 18 and 25 years old” on the one hand and then “between 40 and 65 years old” on the other hand. Lucie Dumoulin says that “we lose donors when they enter the workforce“. That is why the EFS tries to collect directly from companies. Even if “it is mainly in large companies“, she regrets.

115 blood donations in December

You can get up whenever you want, there's something to nibble on at the stand“, informs a nurse as she removes the needle from a donor's arm. “Oh, I'm fine here“, she replies, laughing. For her part, Lucie Dumoulin takes stock of the interventions in the Basin. No doubt, “the Alès collection is working very well“. She gives different figures: “94 donors in October, 80 in November, and 115 in December.

Alès ? We go there every month“, sighs the EFS employee. The inhabitants of the Bassin are generous and loyal. For good reason, a person cannot give blood every four mornings. There is a delay between two donations, generally two to three months depending on gender and build. In other words, the city can boast of having a turnover among its citizens, which makes it possible to achieve this monthly participation.

It should be remembered that while blood donation is important (the stock available nationally is on average 15 days), it is also possible to donate plasma or platelets, which are just as important in the care process and yet are not widely collected (around 80,000 platelet donations in 2023 compared to 2 million blood donations according to the EFS).
