The earth is tired of humans. Scientists have found that humanity is losing the ability to reproduce

Research shows that in the last 40 years alone, sperm concentration has halved, and the rate is only accelerating.

It looks like the Earth is really tired of people – scientists have found that in the near future people may face a reproductive crisis. In the past few decades alone, sperm concentration has halved and studies show that the rate of decline is only increasing, writes The Guardian.

The new study, led by Prof. Hagay Levin of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, based on assessments of more than 15 men between 1973 and 2018. The analysis showed that the average concentration of sperm in the subjects fell from 101.2 million per ml to 49.0 million per ml over the past 40 years.

The first study covered residents of Europe, North America and Australia. However, the new study expanded the geography – the study involved residents of 53 countries, including Central and South America, Africa and Asia.

During the study, the scientists also found that the rate of decline seems to be only increasing – examining the data since 1972, the scientists found that the concentration of spermatozoa decreased by 1.16% annually, however, studying only the data from 2000 to 2018, the researchers found that the decrease was 2.64% per year.

According to the author of the study Khagaya Levin, the results of the study indicate that something is wrong with the globe and humanity should pay attention to this. Scientists warn that in the future we will face a reproductive crisis, and therefore they call for starting work to prevent it now.

Previous studies have shown that fertility is reduced if the sperm concentration falls below 40 microns per ml. The latest estimate is still above this threshold, but scientists warn that this is an average, which means the percentage of men below this threshold will only decrease.

Levin believes that such a clear decrease will inevitably lead to the inability of the world's population to reproduce .

The results of his colleagues are stunning, according to Allan Pacey, a professor of andrology at the University of Sheffield, who was not involved in the study, but he noted that it is important to remember that several markers of sperm quality were not taken into account in the study.

Note that scientists still do not know what is behind the decrease in sperm concentration. According to one version, this may be due to chemicals that destroy the endocrine system, or other environmental factors. All this affects the fetus in the womb. In addition, scientists believe that factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity and malnutrition may also have contributed.
