The first president of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, who was stripped of the status of “leader of the nation” (elbasy) last year, was hospitalized. Alexander Aksyutits, the former director of the state-owned Kazakh TV channel Khabar 24, wrote about this on Facebook on January 20, citing his own sources.
According to him, Nazarbayev was admitted to one of the hospitals in Astana, he is undergoing a comprehensive examination of the heart.
“The medical staff says that there may be a surgical intervention,” Aksyutits said.
Journalist and entrepreneur Dinara Satzhan confirmed that Nazarbayev is in the hospital. He will have a planned operation, she claims.
Qumash, citing the Ministry of Health of Kazakhstan, writes that Nursultan Nazarbayev is at the National Scientific Cardiac Surgery Center in Astana.
The correspondent of Orda.kz was informed that Nazarbayev was not in the hospital of the Administration of the President of Kazakhstan.
There is no official confirmation of the hospitalization of 82-year-old Nazarbayev yet. His press secretary, Aidos Ukibai, does not answer the phone.
Aksyutits headed the Khabar 24 state news channel. He also headed the press service of the pro-government Nur Otan party and was a member of the presidential pool.
Nursultan Nazarbayev was deprived of the status of Elbasy
In Kazakhstan, a referendum was held in June 2022 regarding changes to the Constitution. All references to the first president of the country were removed from the basic law. The Constitutional Court of Kazakhstan eventually canceled the title of “leader of the nation” for Nursultan Nazarbayev.
The former president wore the honorary title for about 13 years – from June 14, 2010. Nazarbayev was the president of Kazakhstan for almost 30 years, he stepped down in March 2019, retaining most of his political privileges.
After mass protests in Kazakhstan, during which 225 people were killed, Nazarbayev appeared before the public for the first time on January 9 2022.
Before that, Nazarbayev was last seen on December 28, 2021 in St. Petersburg at an informal summit of the CIS countries. Nazarbayev spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin during the meeting.
As a result of the protests in Kazakhstan, which lasted from January 2 to 19, 2022, Nazarbayev’s relatives lost their positions.
